Description
When driving eastbound on hwy 201 the signage for exit #14 show right lane must exit and next lane option to continue on hwy but that lane ends with no warning, only a very small merge sign that is too late. At rush hour this is a dangerous area due to traffic still merging in from Bangerter. Need better signage and striping to warn drivers.

Thank you for taking time to contact UDOT with your concern about the sudden merge of the far right hand lane just after Exit 14 on eastbound SR-201. There is a project going through this area of SR-201 soon and we are going to have the contractor doing the work add some "lane reduction" arrows to the pavement prior to this merge to give more advance warning that the far right hand lane ends right after Exit 14. These "lane reduction" arrows are the kind that look skewed to the left indicating to move left. It looks like the "merge" sign is placed where it is at (just after the actual merge) because of the 100 foot rule that we have with signing. We cannot place signs closer than 100 feet together or we get what is called "sign pollution" where it becomes confusing and overwhelming to the public when driving at high speeds and seeing so many signs so close together. The "Exit 14" sign has to remain at the location that it is currently at per the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) which says that exit signs have to be right at the non-paved split between mainline and the ramp. The "merge" sign is then placed at the next available location in the hope that people will see it before the merge so that they have time to move over. The "lane reduction" arrows should help to clear up the confusion that you are seeing out there right now. Thank you for contacting UDOT and feel free to reach out to us again in the future if you have any other comments or concerns.
