Our apologies for the delayed response. The crash history does not meet the guidelines established in the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices and therefore, a change in traffic control is not recommended at this time for this location. 

Jennifer C,thanks for the update. Does traffic dept have any other recommendation to calm traffic since Bleecker st doesn't qualify for 4 way stop?

We are currently reviewing other potential safety improvements to implement in this area.

Hi Jennifer,just following up for any recommendations for bleecker st.

The requested intersection do not meet the warrants to be converted in to all-way stop intersections. These warrants are based on Federal Highway Administration guidelines as established in the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices. A change in traffic control is not recommended at this time. The installation of stop signs that are not warrants are frequently violated with studies showing that 50% of motorists come to a rolling stop and 25% of motorist do not stop at all, providing pedestrians a false sense of safety. Unwarranted stop signs are also lead to unnecessary increase in delay, which in turn, may actually increase peak speeds of vehicles because motorists tend to increase their speeds between stops signs to regain the time spent at the stop signs. However, it should be noted that as part of Vision Zero, the Traffic Division is tasked with developing a comprehensive traffic calming program, which would be petition based, and would encompass a wider menu of traffic calming options like raised intersections and crosswalks, curb extensions, mini roundabouts, and other treatments permissible on residential streets. This program is currently being drafted, but once complete constituents will be able to submit petitions for traffic calming measures other than speed humps.
