The bike racks do not need to be moved. They need to be repositioned. ADA standards state that the sidewalk needs to have a clearance width of 4 feet minimum for wheelchairs. The racks allow the clearance. However, bikes tied to the racks block the clearance. The issue can be resolved by simply repositioning the racks so bikes tied to them are more parallel to the street instead of perpendicular to the sidewalk. Central Avenue needs more bike racks, not less. They do need to be installed correctly as to ADA standards.

Sounds like a good solution to me. All that is needed is access.

Maybe if they can be moved over to Central near the bakery in progress because it is wider.

That area by the bakery is actually a very busy bus stop and the sidewalk is about the same size. The racks just need to be repositioned. Has anyone from the City paying attention to this post?

I was thinking Central, not Congress. Anyhow I'll check with people I know at RRC to make sure this gets attention.

Thanks for clarifying Kristin. The area in front of the bakery is already crowded with a CCTV pole, a traffic light pole, a decorative light pole, and an underground DOT electric/ traffic switch box. Placing a bike rack next to a streetscape fixture that a bike can also be tied to really isn't sensible and neither is blocking access to the DOT switch box. I agree that the City should reposition the bike racks ASAP so the sidewalk is ADA compliant and provide a safe place for bicycle storage.
