This has gotten out hand in lots of neighborhoods. 6000+ people living on the streets, tents, broke down cars and RVs squatting abandoned buildings in Oakland. Our dysfunctional City leader do not seem to have a clue as to how to deal with it.
This illegal encampment is unsafe activity on a public right-of-way.
It is a health, safety and fire hazard issue, and violates multiple local municipal code.
This illegal encampment must removed, and local municipal codes must to be enforced.
Police have been instructed to leave folks camping on sidewalks alone. No enforcement. Time to tell mayor and council things need to change. Clear the sidewalks!
Our elected City officials are breaking numerous city municipal codes and ordinance in allow this to continue. A class action suit against the city is basically suing the tax payers. The city does not seem to a working auditor maybe the grand jury?
Oakland residents & taxpayers need elected city officials who can set right proper policies and direct city staff to generate/deliver solutions.
Oakland is caught in a rather vicious cycle:
1. Elected city officials do not direct city employees to enforce current rules (keeping sidewalks clear, doing fire inspection or ensuring proper OPD behavior, to name a few)
2. Because current rules are not enforced, bad things happen (Ghost Ship fire, San Pablo Ave fire, multiple OPD officers involved in sex trafficking a minor...)
3. City of Oakland then has to pay big bucks in settlements, like the million dollar settlement for the sex trafficking incident. Cringing to see what happens with Ghost Ship & San Pablo Ave fires.
4. Elected city officials pat themselves on the back for thinking how enlightened, compassionate & progressive they are.
