Description
Although I'd like to report each and every serious pothole on Mt Carmel Ave, there are far too many and the road too dangerous to take pictures. After living on this road for the last 23 years, I've come to understand that as a minor backroad on the town's border, it does not recieve the same care as the town's major roads. However, with the continual expansion of Quinnipiac and the growing popularity of the road as a thruway between North Haven, Wallingford, and Hamden (including giant trucks that are no longer prohibited from using the road), this road has seen more traffic than ever before and its condition is worse than ever before. I have the greatest respect for the hardworking members of the Public Works department and I'd like to commend them on their work. However, it seems as if they're on the road almost once a week during the winter months and they still can't keep up with the giant holes that are no longer fillable with just patch. People do not drive slowly on this road and anyone who cares about the integrity of their vehicle (including myself who previously had a tire and rim damaged from a town road) is left with no choice but to swerve around all the major potholes causing an extremely dangerous situation on an already small and narrow road. The neighborhood association as well as employees from Sleeping Giant State Park have repeatedly voiced these same concerns. I truly hope this road is at the top of the list for repaving in the Spring, as the holes get wider and deeper and the likelihood of a serious accident or vehicle damage increases. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this and passing it on to the appropriate authority.

Totally agree and nicely stated. It seems that North Haven attempts to patch some holes with the cold patch mix but only reached so far as Chestnut Lane from King’s Highway. But the cold patch readily pops out leaving a stretch of granular material that gets stuck in your tires and carries over onto your driveway and into your garage. And with that, the holes get bigger.
Repaving is definitely needed, but my concern is that it will lead to even faster speeds on this semi-rural road. So in addition to paving, speed control measures such as speed humps need to be installed.
As a side note, I’ve been here for 29 years and have seen the significant increase in traffic and speed such that there is now a huge negative impact on the quality of life for residents.

Robert, In light of your concerns about traffic calming, you might want to consider attending Mayor Leng's "Mayor's Night Out" this coming Wed, 2/28/18. Traffic calming is an important town-wide issue, and it will be useful to hear Mayor Leng's thoughts on how this need can be adequately funded. Here's some info:
Mayor Curt Balzano Leng is pleased to announce the first “Mayor’s Night Out” event of 2018. “Mayor’s Night Out” will be held on Wednesday, February 28th, from 6:30pm-8:30pm at Thornton Wilder Hall, located in the Miller Memorial Library Complex at 2900 Dixwell Avenue, Hamden CT.
The Mayor will be available for dialogue and citizen input on neighborhood as well as Town-wide issues in an informal coffee hour-type setting. The goal of this initiative is to provide greater accessibility to the Mayor throughout the community and foster a direct connection with residents. This primary focus of this session will be on the development of the upcoming FY18-19 Town operating budget, with opportunities for other topics of discussion.
