Athol is a commonly used bicycle route.

When traveling by bicycle up 2nd Ave to Athol Ave, it is necessary to cross E. 18th St. There is not a cutaway from the right lane of 2nd Ave, allowing bicycles to cross E 18th St safely. Instead, it is necessary to go to the left side of 2nd Ave to reach the cutaway. This is not as safe, requiring bicycles to be on the wrong side of 2nd Ave. Alternatively, bicycles could turn right on E. 18th, make a U turn and Park Blvd, and then turn right on Athol, but this is a ridiculous amount of work.
