Thank you for reporting this issue. Please note that Crossing Guards are special trained and assigned by the City and the School District. Although the intentions of the volunteer are admirable, only professional Crossing Guards are legally able to work in such capacities. That said, the City works collaboratively with the School District in providing properly trained Crossing Guards. Traffic studies are conducted at request to determine if thresholds mandated by state and federal guidelines are reached. Unfortunately, with this school year ending next week, we will be unable to perform a proper study until next school year begins. Hi, my name is Jessica and I have volunteered as the morning crossing guard for the last 5 school years at the intersection of Chicago and Cota behind Foothill Elementary school. I only do the morning as I have a full time job that prevents me from doing it after school or I would be out there then too. Every morning my husband are the last ones to work and are grateful that our employers are understanding of our need to keep these kids safe. We do this because we do not want anyone to have to experience the sadness of having a child in a serious preventable accident like I have had with my youngest son 5 years ago. I do this because I had a child, in a coma who had to relearn everything to do everything again. How to walk, talk and function again. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to go through and some days are still hard. I just finally had gotten my son home when one day in August of 2013 while walking my daughter to school, I saw a child nearly plowed down in the crosswalk back there and the driver had the nerve to blame the child for crossing in the crosswalk! I found out that the city of Corona does not feel there is a need for somebody back there. So I have been back there, everyday, rain or shine. I am very much an introvert and I can not tell you how hard it was for me to push all my anxiety aside, put on the bright yellow vest, use my stop sign and put my 3 construction cones(all that my husband bought for me) in the crosswalk but I sure learned fast that if I don't, I would be runned over! There are still days when people refuse to stop, when I have to hold kids back or when I say a little prayer that the car that is ripping down the street will stop in time. My daughter is promoting from Foothill in about 2 weeks and my time there is done. Please, I am really worried that somebody will get hurt when I am no longer there. The city has come out to "monitor" the area. And its funny, its always been on a wednesday morning, when there is no preschool or late, after missing all the chaos or somehow, you guys just come on the very rare slow day. But there is a need. I cross between 30-40 kids a day, sometimes more. And that is not counting their parents, who I cross back. In the last 5 years, I have come to adore many of these kids and their families. I started with the idea of helping kids get safely to school but in the end, I have gotten so much out of doing this. I will really miss these kids and their families and I just want them to get safely to school and back home. With that being said, it is really interesting that there is no stop sign when Cota and Chicago meet as there really should be one there too. People drive really drive crazy down these streets before and after school and I would just hate to hear that some child had to pay the price of a parent, in a hurry to get to where ever after getting their own child to school, causes harm that could have been prevented. Thank you!

Due to city finances it’s less expensive to pay off a lawsuit after someone gets hurt then paying for a crossing guard over a period of time!

Let's be reactive, not proactive!

I challenge someone from the city to go ahead and do that crosswalk for 1 day to see what it is actually like before making another general comment and closing this issue yet again. Oh, but wait, thats not your job? But its wasn't mine either but somebody had to do something because the city nor the school is very concerned about it! It IS an issue, a huge one! So go ahead and try doing it one day before you make your claim that its not necessay! And this issue has been reported, there is no need to leave a phone number for Lisette to call again, to report again once the new school year starts! There IS a problem, you know about the problem, stop pushing off the problem!

Please excuse my earlier snide comments, but it is somewhat upsetting when a representative of the city suggests that after five years of my wife volunteering her time to make sure that EVERY child is safe (not just ours) “that is better to do nothing at all”. Because we all know what the final outcome will be - nothing.

We also understand that this is not the city’s chosen method of communication but calling a phone number and to either be shut down by the city or to play phone tag is not an option. To insure the safety of everyone’s child who cannot defend themselves, public opinion/voices must be heard.

There’s ongoing issue with school drop-offs and pick-ups across the district. We see it on Facebook and Twitter and this is probably due to a lack of resources. The 91-freeway debacle has many of our officers patrolling our thoroughfares due to increased congestion. But Chicago St. has more than its fair share of issues. Not only do we try to keep children safe when crossing the street but we try to be good roll models. Sometimes it involves cleaning up all the broken beer/alcohol bottles strewn up and down the street. Picking up litter every chance we have. During drop-offs we ask people to not drop-off their kids in the middle of the street and then diving between buses!

Let’s work together, step up and come to solution and keep everyone’s child safe!

Not having a crosswalk person at this crosswalk before and after school is still an issue. People speed up and down the street and it is very unsafe. Please send someone out to evaluate asap.

Please send someone to evaluate. We need a crosswalk person asap!! I almost got hit last week crossing the street as I was walking back home from walking my children to school in the morning.
A child almost got hit too last week that I witnessed.

This is still an issue. Just this morning I witnessed a kid almost get hit because cars are rushing and not paying attention. Very scary! Sad that this won't be important until someone does get hit!

This issue is still on-going, it has been 601 days and it hasn't been evaluated yet!
