I really appreciate Jeff's timely arrival, and his careful attention to my concern, but am disappointed that he could not detect what I am convinced is detectable. I believe the background noice / vibration of daylight and working hours made it more difficult to discern. I am awaiting a 2nd opinion, and especially during a quieter period of the day. But as I write this, I can feel the floor of my study vibrating and can hear the low frequency hum of what sounds like a large piece of machinery operating somewhere interconnecting with the sewer system, something that only began some weeks ago and has continued unabated since, including, alas, many sleepless nights.

I visited the area and found nothing that would relate to your issue from a sewer perspective. I searched the perimeter of the home and tried to make sense of any type of disturbances that was equivalent to your concern. I had no luck. I left a card attached to the mailbox.

It's here and real. I now have 5 people who can feel the vibration and another homeowner can hear the low level sound indoors. The key is that it's very subtle during the daylight hours because there is so many other noises and vibrations in the environment. One has to be here during a quiet evening. In any case, I have now a pretty good idea of what the source is: it's the water system, not the sewer. The City installed two 'dump' / overflow stations (green boxes down by the Bay) some months ago when this noise first became apparent. I note that these appear to be cyclic flow dumps, which could be the cause, or simply waterhammer because of the added length of pipe and some synchronous feedback. I suggest trying a stethoscope (I have one you can use) on a water line down Serpentine Dr S or Karleton and you'll sense it easily. Then if you visit me in the evening (appointment please), you'll hear the soundbox effect in rooms of my house. RIGHT NOW as I'm typing this in my study, I feel the floor vibrating and hear the low level sound. This is for real. And I am a 'doctor' (Ph.D. in Fluid Mechanics, taught engineering for 10 years at THE Ohio State University, national lab research, rocket science, etc.--so I am not giving up on this because it's unacceptable: the City is not entitled to vibrate my floors and disperse hums in my rooms).

Upon our review and investigation of this issue, we have concluded that this is not sanitary sewer issue. You may want to check with other utilities.
