In my dream scenario they do what they just did on Washington Street in Roslindale -- make a dedicated bus and bike lane separated from traffic and let the bikes go safely, slow the cars, and get that route 99 bus running like it should!

If you are referring to the area near the rotary at the Fellsway I can assure you that there are traffic enforcement officers with RADAR and LIDAR set up there quite frequently. Is there a different area that you are suggesting?

Folks who live north of there from the rotary to the next rotary in Medford at the skating rink know that stretch is a complete speedway. I have to cross it to take my four year old to school and we sometimes wait for ten minutes for it to be safe to cross, even in a crosswalk. I’ve missed the 99 bus because of the speeding on highland making it impossible to get to the bus stop. People are cutting over from 93 and they are on waze and their aggravation and aggressiveness is palpable. It has only been this way the last few years.

I think we also may get to the point where we need some waze enforcement on the aide streets like Blomerth. People dart up there in frustration and don’t realize it’s a multi phase hill and if you’re going 50 and the kids are playing ball in the ateeet like they do every day it’s quite dangerous. It’s too steep to see oncoming traffic or things in the road.

a raised crosswalk like they have in cambridge and somerville would stop speeding altogether and would make walkers crossing to get to the bus stop feel a-lot safer

That whole area is quite dangerous. Given that, I cannot believe that MPD has twice in this thread referred to that intersection as a "rotary." It is NOT a rotary. Rotary traffic rules do NOT apply. The rules there are the OPPOSITE of rotary rules, as vehicles on the Felleseway always have right of way over vehicles already in what is being incorrectly referred to as the "rotary." This mistaken belief that it is a rotary, and that rotary right of way rules apply, is probably the number one cause of accidents there. MPD should not be reinforcing it.

Beyond that, NOTHING will change in the city relative to the behavior of motorists until MPD's stated policy of lax traffic enforcement is changed. Annually, Malden issues 1/2 the number of citations as Everett, 1/3 the number of Revere and Medford, and 1/4 the number of Chelsea and Somerville. This is by design -- the result of a conscious policy choice by the department that has been criticized by the city's own auditors. As far as whether there are MPD officers stationed there on traffic enforcement duty on a regular basis: I have lived at the same address in Malden, only about 1/2 mile from there, for almost 20 years. I have probably traveled that stretch of road at least 5,000 times (literally) in that time. And I have seen Malden Police engaged in traffic enforcement there on no more than a very small handful of occassions. I have also read the promises of increased enforcement on Glenwood (at the hairpin turn) and Autumn (especially at the intersection with Winter) but have literally seen NOTHING since. So I am left having absolutely no faith that anything will change unless and until MPD makes enforcement a priority city-wide.

This area will remain under intermittent enforcement
