Q. Please describe the issue below - be sure to provide as many details as possible, like location, time of day, if this issue has been reported before, etc:
A. Spa Beach. Understand there is a plan for a 7 story high sculpture to be included in the renovation of Spa Beach. Please reconsider and do NOT limit views of the waterfront with this outsized object. Concerns also come to mind regarding how something of that type could withstand hurricane force winds. Over all, seems a very poor idea. Thank you for listening.

Update from the Office of Cultural Affairs: Thank you for your inquiry regarding the redevelopment of the St. Petersburg Pier. The display in question is a net sculpture which, like netting, is essentially see-through so it won’t block the waterfront. The netting itself is 15 times stronger than steel as it is made of Teflon fibers. It will be engineered to withstand hurricane-force winds, along with any new construction, and will have to pass permitting as such. We estimate the size to be roughly 260 feet in length when complete. There are videos online that you can view Janet Echelman’s sculptures to familiarize yourself with her work. The five poles holding the netting up will be roughly 70 feet high, similar to a sailboat mast. For a point of reference the HMS Bounty, when it was moored on the waterfront, was 111 feet high.
