Unfortunately jrocco36, this is part of the ludicrous upcoming project to narrow down one of the main N-S thoroughfares to widen bike lanes and remove vehicle lanes... Our planning geniuses vacationed in Amsterdam or New York, and are now trying to apply their "visions" of cookie-cutter transplanted" solutions to St. Pete's non-existent problems, while ignoring real traffic issues (East-West routes across the peninsula are all solved, right?)... And i wonder how many of these "experts" will be biking every weekday during our rainy season to work, while being so eager to ruin others' commutes... Ruin businesses and slow down thousands of drivers for a possibility of couple of hundred bikers.

I bike everyday to work. what is needed then is to do just like they did on 1st street and what they did along 62ed ave .. widen the walkway to both pedestrian and bicycle riders can share the same safe path away from automobile and truck traffic. Also it is going to take some distracted drivers or bike riders and we are going to start seeing deaths from mixing bikes and cars. Ive been riding bikes to work for over 10 years and rarely do I ever see anyone else doing the same. and from the looks of most of the other bike riders I see they ride bikes because they have lost the privilege to operate a motor vehicle. so screwing up traffic for one or two bike riders is a waste of tax payers money. This is one more reason to make sure we vote the ones who think like this out of office and put the people back in charge.

The changes to the traffic patterns and markings on Dr ML King Jr St N to which you are referring are part of the first phase of the ‘Complete Streets’ resurfacing project that will ultimately include resurfacing work from 4th to 34th Avenues North, adding bike lanes from 4th to 30th Avenues North, and adding five enhanced pedestrian crosswalks. In order to accommodate bike lanes, one of five motor vehicle lanes will be repurposed. Changes are being made to the center turn lane, as well.

The Complete Streets project will encourage a roadway that is safer and more convenient for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, persons with disabilities, users and operators of public transit, seniors, children, and movers of commercial goods.

Yes, this is beyond silly. The roads are not friendly to pedestrians. By definition a road is for automotive traffic. The city is forcing this traffic nightmare down on us serfs with ZERO input. This is outta control. The roads are becoming bike lanes to appeal to a very minor mode of transport. We let them ruin Central Ave downtown and there is no sign of stopping this manure. Bicycles are NOT a solution. Wide, safe roads with simple traffic patterns save lives. Jamming cars closer in lanes does not reduce speeds, it just creates traffic.

So who's brilliant idea was this to force cars and bikes together? Like I said I bike commute every day. I am not going to put my life in danger and ride where there is no buffer between auto traffic and myself.
Like so much in St. Petersburg the city doesn't care what the people want they just force this down on us all...

BTW do you who make these rules bike commute every day?? EVERY DAY?

Project Summary – MLK Resurfacing & Redesign
As part of the Complete Streets initiative, the City of St. Petersburg will resurface and redesign Dr. M.L. King, Jr. Street to promote safe, continuous traffic and pedestrian flow while supporting business needs along the corridor. The plan will include resurfacing work from 4th to 34th Avenues North, add bike lanes from 4th to 30th Avenues North, and add five enhanced pedestrian crosswalks. Construction is projected to begin in Sept. 2018 after Labor Day Weekend with further improvements to the corridor, including enhanced crosswalks with medians, taking place in late 2018-19.

Since late 2017, city transportation planners have gathered suggestions from residents and business owners in the Crescent Heights, Crescent Lake, Euclid-St. Paul, Historic Uptown, Magnolia Heights, and Greater Woodlawn neighborhoods to identify ways of improving safety and traffic flow along the corridor for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Please provide link or links to where this information is accessible to the public. Specifically I would like to see what type of research was done by the "transportation planners" and how they obtained this information from residents and business owners. Was this a phone call, a written questionnaire, an in-person survey? I have lived in this area almost 30 years and wasn't asked for any input. I would also like to see in this information how many cars drive MLK/9th Street on a typical day compared to the number of people riding bikes on this street. With months and months of 90 plus degree weather, it if difficult for me to believe there are that many cyclists on this street, especially during a week day. Perhaps if we were given this information to review this all might begin to make more sense, because right now there is no sense in this "planning."

Well I can tell you in my expereance as a bike commuter for over 10 years and 4 years going up and down MLK (9th St) I rarely ever see other bike commuters or any other type of bike riders and cyclists. some times I may see one for about a week but most people never stick with it.
I work at a campus with over 800 people working there and we are supplied with a very nice room to store our bikes with showers and my bike is the only one there on a constant basis.
So I would say there isn't enough bike riders to make it worth spending millions making bike lanes.
Besides if they really wanted to make them "Safe" then they would do as they did along 1st street and widen the walkway to provide room for bikes and pedestrians

Remember this and vote out the current city council when you get the chance.
