The fundamental problem is that this is a legacy light that was never removed or changed from when Vermont Ave was a 2 way street on this block. Everyone knows there is NO TRAFFIC coming into that intersection except the vehicles northbound on 12th St NW, so everyone rolls through the light (guilt also). More appropriate would be entirely removing the traffic signals or replace with a 'yield' sign (there is a 'stop' sign on northbound Vermont even though no traffic is supposed to be going that direction) AND line the intersection with ZEBRA STRIPPED PEDESTRIAN CROSSING so drivers are required to stop when pedestrians are present (rather than focusing on a traffic light).

I have nearly been hit many times by cars running the red light. Today being the most recent... Someone was actually obeying the light and everyone started going around that car and then even around me as i walked across on the crosswalk. Crazy idiots. Anyone not familiar with the intersection is going to get hurt. Drivers don't bother looking to their left anymore... Too busy talking on their cell phones half the time. Some poor biker is going to get nailed hard one of these days.
