Similar issues happen when turning left from the Gardiner's Jarvis off-ramp on the green arrow ... people see the red light for N-S traffic and hit the brakes. The answer to this ? Better driver education and licensing standards. If someone cannot turn properly and use good common sense, they should not be operating a motor vehicle.

I'm thinking more or better positioned left turn arrows. You are right, they would have to somehow be differentiated from Sherbourne northbound traffic signals. I don't know how but I'm sure the experts would know. I only drive this route once or twice a week. Have seen the confusion maybe 6 times in the last year.

There is already a Left Turn Only sign on the north-east corner of Lakeshore so only the driver doing the left turn can see it. I don't think there is anything more anyone could do. Some people are just bad at driving!

I've never seen a sign at the NE corner, will look closer next time. But I don't think it can be written off as bad drivers, more education is needed, etc. I've seen more confused drivers at this intersection than anywhere else I drive. I would still say something's not right with signals, signs, etc.

If you go through this intersection in a car or even just look on google streetview, there are two Left Turn signal signs - one in front of the left turn lane and then the one on the northeast corner which in the line of sight as the driver turns left. The city has put up signs and lights to help guide the driver. A solid honk on the horn if the person stops suddenly would be all that is necessary.

Signals should be clear and this one can and should be improved. The issue is the fact that this kind of left turn is not typical. We have here a divided highway, whereas 99% of left turns are made across undivided roadways, where the oncoming traffic can be clearly seen to be stopped for the duration of the advanced green left-turn arrow. In the situation at hand we have pillars, a wide median, and two red lights still some distance away after the turn is completed. Anyone can be confused by this kind of placement of lights when there is a wide median because the red lights in front of them are sufficiently distant to set off the "stop" response, whereas in left turns without a median the red lights are not even noticed after the change in direction. The ANSWER to this may be that there is no need to have light signals for northbound traffic on the distant north corners of the intersection. The lights for northbound traffic should be placed where they can be seen only by the northbound drivers for whom they are intended, that is, at or close to the south side of the median facing south, not in the middle of the median and certainly not on the north side of the intersection, far from the northbound drivers stopped at the south side of the very wide intersection. The only useful light on the north is the green light on the northeast corner synchronized with the eastbound left turn arrow, and with a "Left Turn Signal" sign beside it.
