Description
Sysco Food truck blocking the bike lane, while parked in a bus stop, as well as well over a foot from the curb. Not only are cyclists forced out into the roadway, bus riders now must get off the curb (hard for strollers/wheelchairs/etc), walk across the bike lane, which may have confused cyclists who do not realize the bus is improvising a stop, and step up onto the bus (again, really, really hard for strollers/wheelchairs/etc).
This has been a chronic problem spot for years. How do we make it stop? This is not a safe spot for trucks to park, but the City of Cambridge refuses to give trucks a safe spot to park here so the operators just do whatever they need to get their jobs done. Can we please just work together to provide safe loading zones so we don't have to resort to nearly impossible enforcement?

There is an existing loading zone immediately across the street from where the truck in the attached photo is parked, which is also the side for which that truck is delivering. While we understand that the width of the parking lane on the entire length of Hampshire Street requires trucks to overhang the width of the space, the only solution to that issue is to remove parking on one side of the street which will require a detailed public process and a more substantial change to the roadway layout. We will keep this and other requests in mind in developing future projects in the City.
In the interim, this will continue to be an enforcement issue.
Thank you for your report.

If we're going to play hot potato, I'm going to re-open this issue until we can get a response from CPD, even though I'm sure it'll be the same form response for every obstructed bike lane ticket.
Also, what's the process fo requesting the City begin a formal process to improve bicyclist and bus passenger safety for Hampshire St? It sounds like the City is open to the process, but no one has requested that process begin? If that's true, can I please request a formal process begin here?

In order to discuss the possibility of considering the Hampshire corridor as well as to understand other competing issues, the best thing to do would be to make a comment on the city's online Wikimap, which will play a role in prioritizing future work on the citywide bike plan.

In addition, there will be a public process starting up late winter/early Spring to update the citywide bike plan which will include detailed feasibility analyses for major corridors throughout the city and prioritization of improvements. While information is not yet posted as to the schedule of public meetings, we recommend checking the Community Development Department website for more info early in the New Year.
