This entire corner should be studied as to traffic signal timing. Every Saturday, traffic backs up on Tonnele Ave. from the Charlotte Circle (139 below grade) to JFK for hours. All of these signals are related but none are coordinated. The signal at Tonnele and Broadway allows 4 cars to turn before it changes. This entire corner is a neglected mess.
Signal at Newark & JFK -- this is a very wide intersection with turning lanes, heavy traffic . It needs to be longer to allow pedestrians time to cross. And, it's heavily used by foot traffic.

The county will never do anything to fix this intersection. It appears they recent changed the timing of the lights (granting pedestrians the right of way for all crosswalks) that has somehow made things even worse. I didn't even know that was possible, but they did it! It is quite literally a free-for-all for both pedestrians and vehicles and its only a matter of time before someone gets injured given the chaos.

Please do not change anything about the new timing at this intersection. As a car owner and a resident, it is time that Jersey City start prioritizing pedestrians in the Journal Square area rather than cars. Hundreds, if not thousands, of pedestrians cross this intersection every morning and evening on the way to and from the PATH. I personally live on St. Paul’s so having traffic around here isn’t in my best interest but I’m fine with traffic if it means pedestrians can cross safely.

the timing doesn't prioritize pedestrians though, that's the problem. the new timing results in people crossing when the turn signals are active because they don't see them and also don't see any vehicles moving/all red lights on straightaways. since the turn signal is under 10 seconds, pedestrians are then stuck in the middle of JFK with oncoming traffic in both directions. those pedestrians then cause gridlock of vehicles and the cycle continues ad naseum. hopefully when 139 opens some of the vehicle congestion will be relieved, but it is (from a traffic engineering standpoint) a dangerous and improperly designed timing (as evidenced by the left-hand pocket always overflowing in the morning). the ideal solution would be to make it better both for pedestrians and for vehicles. doesn't have to be one or the other.
