This is an ongoing issue, not just on Seventh, but throughout the city. I’ve complained in the past, but nothing ever gets done about it. Everything gets pushed into the bike lanes to clear the car lanes. The best you can expect from the city is an explanation for Why It Must Be This Way. Sigh.

What has staff done to address the issue?

This is a perpetual issue. Please instruct street workers to clear up to the curb. Add 2-3 feet more each side to keep the bike throughway safe.

Yep that picture captures it perfectly. I bike this stretch in the street with my kids to school every weekday. With the bike lane snowed in, I've been occupying the vehicle lane which leads to some questionable passes by motorists.

Even worse is when the plows push the snow from the car lanes into the bike lanes, resulting in a clear car lane next to a bike lane that resembles a luge track. It's dangerous, and somebody will get hurt. And I'm sorry, but "issue has been addressed" by doing nothing but waiting for the next thaw is an inadequate response!

Please note that the street plow has pushed the snow into the bike lane, making a bad situation even worse. Is this what is meant by “issue has been addressed?”

It might be possible that the car traffic has assisted in some of the snow removal although there is an obvious line where the plow wasn't far over enough. I encourage everyone to take the lane, your safety is more important then someone getting to their destination 1 min faster. Also, you can use as much of the lane as you like since you are a taxpayer. My opinion only.

Jarin is half right. State law on this is that you should bike as near to the right of the usable roadway as practicable (*not* "as possible" - big difference), but if there isn't enough lane remaining for other traffic to pass you without leaving the lane, you do not have to keep to the right. On a one-way street, it's right or left-hand side. The city does not maintain *any* bike facilities in the winter. It's a serious problem. But the answer is for you, as a cyclist, to do what state law says, and in many cases, just take the right-most lane. What I do is 1) decide if I can see at least 3' of usable bike lane, 2) decide - if I use that 3', will motorists in the adjacent lane pass me at a safe distance?, if so I use it, if not, 3) switch to the regular lane, moving far enough into it to make clear that motorists need to get over to pass at the required 5'. I'm not a lawyer, but I did successfully fight a ticket from the city on very close to the same issue. This is MCL 257.660a(c). (http://legislature.mi.gov/doc.aspx?mcl-257-660a)
