While this issue is rampant in The Heights, I take no issue with this individual example. Sure, they shouldn’t park there, but they also do so at the risk of another car legally parking on the street and blocking them in. At the same time, they are voluntarily taking another car off the street, thus opening up another legal street parking spot for the rest of us.
The real issue is when someone creates an illegal driveway by attempting to paint “No Parking” lines on the street, chip away at the curb to make it look more like a driveway, put up No Parking signs, etc. in those cases, they are removing a legal street parking space that would otherwise be available to anyone.
Again, I’m not saying it’s right or fair for anyone to pull this type of move off, but I’d rather the focus be placed on resolving the illegal driveways that take otherwise available and legal street parking spots out of the equation.
The only chance anything ever gets resolved on a larger scale is if the city does a full audit of every property and driveway in the city and requires homeowners to remove illegal driveways or face large fines. Unfortunately, I don’t believe that is a realistic measure.
