mapninja, I remember reading about that incident. A friend experienced a similar GANG MENTALITY incident after having an accident on Goffe St a few years ago. Black street population, white driver vs black driver... But, I know, racial tensions just do NOT exist in our city, and there is NEVER any such thing as black on white hate crimes, ssssshhhhhhhhhh - the liberals must firmly stick to their propaganda and control the media.

Today, one of these hoodlums hit a schoolbus. What is it going to take for the cops to start confiscating these bikes???? The only thing that these criminals will respond to is when they hear that the bikes are getting confiscated by the cops on the spot. That might actually change their behavior. I work nights and am fed up with hearing the loud engines roaring all around the Westville neighborhood all day long. And then seeing them popping wheelies and steering into the path of traffic. But obviously, the safety of the pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers is of utmost importance.

Legislation in Hartford (thanks to Justin Elicker for listening to consituents and working with New Haven delegation to get this bill on the books) will allow New Haven to demand $ 1000 - $ 2000 for return of confiscated bikes/ATVs. NHPD in Fair Haven and Fair Haven Heights confiscated 50 - 60 bikes last summer but only $ 80 to get the bike back. But this legislation alone is not the answer. We need LEADERSHIP from CHIEF ESSERMAN on this issue. It is an enormous quality of life issue that threatens to chase many people out of New Haven. This has become gang activity and should be treated as such.

1666 Chapel St. is also a meetup site. Nearly dozen bikes and quads were tearing through Edgewood Park yesterday. It was horrible.

What we can do is PACK the next East Shore Management Team Meeting--2nd Tuesday of the month @7 PM, Morris Cove Firehouse. Bring everyone you know who is concerned about the current, out-of-control bike/ATV situation. Time to take our City back. I will be closing dirt bike/ATV complaints that pre-date the conclusion of the police undercover operation (see www.newhavenindependent.org/index.php/archives/entry/9_arrested_in_dirt_bike_sting/). I do not expect the dirt bike/ATV issue to be completely solved, but it will be helpful to policing efforts to distinguish new reports from those before this recent operation.
