Description
Parents are dropping off their children and picking them up in an area that is not the designated parent pick up/ drop off location. That location is at the front of Phenix Middle School and Bethal High School. This area has been designated for emergency vehicles and was meant for school walkers only. Cars are driving to the emergency gate, parking in "no parking" zones and conducting 3+ point turns which is creating a safety hazard for walking students and traffic congestion. The signage needs to be corrected and enforced to deter people from making this their own personal drop off point in order to maintain safety for the children and quality of life for residents.

This is not a school issue as much as a public property issue. The intersection off Decesare Drive and Gray's Landing and the dead-end on Grays Landing are filled with cars and illegally parked vehicles during school drop off-0700-0730 and pick up times- 1420. There are no crosswalks designated for the walking children, so they walk down the middle of the road in traffic and cross whenever and wherever they can.
We need "No Parking, Stopping or Standing from 0645-07:45 and 13:45-14:45" signs posted throughout the area. Residents who are particularly interested in this are: 2 Decesare Drive, 79 Grays Landing, 81 Grays Landing and 1 Decesare Drive. Proper signage would discourage parents from dropping off their children which creates traffic and safety issues. 2 Decesare Drive is a corner lot and would like signage that would allow two spots for vehicles along the side rather than lose the entire side to "no parking signs" as it is now.
The dead-end should have a "No U-turn" sign posted at the end of the dead end on or near the gate. Since the gate located at that dead end is for emergency vehicles only, it should be properly marked as such. Vehicles are double parking in front of the gate, and turning around (3-5 point turns, jumping curbs while children are walking in the road or on the sidewalks. Cars are parking in residents mailboxes, driveways and parking against traffic. they are parking any way they see feasible in this area to drop their children off.
This area was never intended to be a parent drop off location. It is a residential area. The child drop off location is at the front of the school and is accessible via Big Bethel Road.
The lack of signage in our area creates a quality of life issue for residents as well as a SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE for the children and parents walking their children to and from school. It is only a matter of time before someone gets hurt. The traffic has increased exponentially since the first day of school and has become even worse since last week.

It really isn't fair that the residents here at Gray's landing and Decesare Drive are inundated with traffic that SHOULD be going to the front of the school and following proper procedures which not only ensure the safety of other people's children but the safety of their own children as well.

Hemi420th,
How are the residents who live in the affected section of Michaels Woods forcing the entire neighborhood to drive all the way around to get to school? The problem is those parents and children that DO NOT reside in Michaels Woods are coming into the neighborhood and filling up the streets. It’s simple, if you don’t live here, don’t use this area as your convenient access point, especially considering the school and police have now sent out messages stating to use the proper drop-off and pick-up point (at the front of the school). The residents in the affected area do not mind the walkers; it’s the parents that feel it’s necessary to drive their kids a quarter mile to get to school.
As for opening the gate, the school has already stated they WILL be installing additional gates along the access road behind the school to restrict the flow of traffic. The yellow gate is for EMERGENCY traffic only and will only be opened during such.
This entire situation was brought on by a few parents that teamed up and spread the word that there was a shortcut to get to the school. Now that there are enforceable signs and policy set by both Hampton School Administration and the Hampton City Police, it’s up to the parents to be a role model to their children and abide by the law. If this situation were say in front of your house, would you accept it or fight to protect the safety of the neighborhood?
