My question is in regards to SW Lane & SW Washburn Ave. from 10th St. to 17th St. Both streets received an overlay in the past year. The striping for both streets was not painted on the centerline of the street but was offset to the left of the centerline. The location of the striping crowds the left lane quite a bit. Most of this area is posted with NO PARKING signs so that can't be the reason for the offset. The SW Washburn Ave. striping at SW Huntoon does not match up and you can see the difference in the location of the stripping. Was the striping painted this way for a reason or was this a mistake?

Excellent question! The City of Topeka is proud to be adding a dedicated bike lane on Lane and Washburn from 15th Street north to 8th in a project this summer. The segments from 17th to 15th will employ sharrows, rather than dedicated bike lanes. I have attached an image that shows what the bike lane will look like on Lane north of 15th. Our transportation network, here in Topeka and nationwide, is beginning a transformation where the pavement we have now will be shared more with other modes (pedestrians, bikes, scooters, buses). This project is just one way that we will see these changes taking shape in Topeka. To that end, lane widths are 11' adjacent to Jerry's parking stalls and will be also for the right lane of Lane, once the bike lane is installed. This can seem somewhat uncomfortable when there are long vehicles in the parking stalls or when traveling at speeds higher than the posted 30mph. Larger vehicles driving on Lane and Washburn will be more comfortable travelling slower than the posted speed limit and will need to be cautious in making turns onto and off of the roadway.
