Going to boil the original comment down to a request for an eastbound left turn signal. This is one of our last light bulb signals and is scheduled to be replaced with LED signals this year. New 4-section flashing yellow left arrow signals will be installed for Shelburne Road. This allows for future flexibility in the sequencing for better efficiency. Electric NO TURN ON RED signs eastbound and westbound will protect the advance walk portion of the pedestrian crossing and establish pedestrians presence in the crosswalk before east-west signals turn green. Left turn signals east and west are not contemplated in this design. Westbound appears to be a more difficult maneuver in the afternoon versus eastbound right turn traffic. Adding a westbound left turn complicates protecting the south crosswalk. A second way to turn left onto Shelburne Road exists at the shopping center signal and many people use this in the afternoon. An eastbound left signal has never been observed as being necessary in regular commutes through this intersection both in the morning and afternoon.

An EBLT signal, which appears to be asked for in the original comment, cannot be accommodated without a lane reconfiguration. For a left turn signal to be effective it needs its own lane for storage and detection. The majority of EB traffic appears to turn right. Right lane for right turn only is the best setup for this pattern. If the left turn were dominant, it would make sense to consider the left lane for left turns only. Improvements are scheduled for this signal this spring. Closing this issue does not indicate a change in plans with upcoming signal improvements. Short of adding another lane EB, an EBLT signal is not practical at this intersection at this time. The Department of Public Works has resolved this request.
