Municipal Code Chapter 8.76 ANTI-BLIGHT PROGRAM
"8.76.020 Definitions...
8. The outside of the building and/or the property fails to meet the standards set forth below:
a. The exterior and areas exposed to public view of all commercial and residential property and premises shall be kept free from deterioration and shall be in a good state of repair. The property shall be maintained so that they reflect a reasonable level of maintenance in keeping with the standards of the community and not constitute a blighting factor for adjoining property owners, or an element leading to the progressive deterioration of the neighborhood. Such maintenance of the outside of the property shall include, without limitation, the following:
i. All surfaces shall be maintained free of broken glass, crumbling stone or brick or other condition reflective to deterioration or inadequate maintenance.
ii. The maintenance and appearance of the grounds and yards of premises shall be such that they reflect the level of upkeep of surrounding premises and properties. This shall include but not be limited to grass that has been allowed to go to seed, severely overgrown bushes and trees, dead trees and trash, rubbish,..".
Obviously nothing has been done at this location. I also read the complaint PDS posted for Hansen which I found amazing not because it is outside of his St Mary's, but because it is the next street over from the school. I guess the taxpayers on Whittier Street deserve less.
Maybe Marty McCarthy will run for the council this year.

Thank you for reporting your issue to the City of Bridgeport. An inspector has visited the site and the overgrowth was cut in June . The City has this property on its schedule to be cut in August. Thank you for your patience.
Note that you have not addressed the crumbling wall. If you take the time to visit the property now you and the mayor and the health department and public facilities would see that there weeds have taken over and invaded all the neighbors. You still haven’t provided me with your name and contact information.
Hello, I have been informed that the Office of Planning and Economic Development as well as Public Facilities Maintenance will be going to inspect the wall and should violations be found they will address them. Thank you for your patience.
Please call our office at (203) 576-7765 if you have any other questions or blight issues.
Respectfully, I have a different opinion when I read the sequence of posts.
Maybe review my post citing the blight ordinance, which the official neither acknowledged nor addressed.
Redemption only after remediation.
The phone number posted by BO7 is the number to report blight.
The blight webpage says grass should be no higher than 15 inches and the city mows only when there is a complaint when the grass is over 3 feet?!
That shows a complete lack of respect for the neighborhood. Including that crumbling wall and the invasive weeds.

As I mentioned before, an inspector has visited the site and the overgrowth was cut in June. The City has this property on its schedule to be cut in August. As to the wall, a representative from Office of Planning and Economic Development, Public Facilities Maintenance, and City Mason all went to inspect the wall. The wall was deem to be structurally sound and does not to be remediated. Thank you for your patience.
As I mentioned before, this city owned property has been under the direct oversight of Office of Planning and Economic Development for many years. The neglect of this site is the direct result of their "oversight."
BO7, what about the esthetics of the wall...it is clearly crumbling as anyone can see in the picture. Even if by some miracle that doesn't make it structurally unsound, surely the sight of that crumbling wall isn't the image we want to project of our city. It really does make me sad that we are so accepting of the sight of deterioration in our city. There is no incentive for the private homeowner to care for their property if the city doesn't set an example. How will we ever raise ourselves up if we ignore things like this?
BO7, thank you for your response but your post said nothing will be done except that grass will be cut.
Respectfully, these conditions wouldn’t be allowed in St. Mary’s.

If that eyesore of a wall and those obnoxious weeds were on private property, would the City make them remediate the conditions!?!
The City's default plan is to do nothing.
Shameful.

BO7 Can't we take a pro-active view of crumbling (literally) structures like this and repair before it completely falls apart creating an even bigger mess to repair later? Why can't the city see that this is a POTENTIAL problem even if the engineers don't think it is currently a problem. Isn't it better to prevent than to have to come back later and spend MORE money for a major repair?
Thank you for reporting your issue to the City of Bridgeport. I understand your point KFW. However, the City mason, City maintenance, and Office Of Planning and Economic Development have all said, the wall is structurally sound and have had the overgrowth cut. Your issue is now closed.
That wall is blight. If the “mason” can’t repair that wall, the get a new city mason. Get a new steward to over see the maintenance of the site. The grass has been mowed twice this year. That alone speaks volumes about how much the city cares about this neighborhood.
It is more than sad, it is apathetic and negligent.

This property is owned by the City of Bridgeport, the taxpayers fund the maintenance of the property.
The City does nothing to maintain this property!
Someone is getting paid to NEGLECT this property.
Shame on all of you on the City payroll.
Shame on the councilmen for this area.

This city owned property has been under the direct oversight of Office of Planning and Economic Development for many years.
This place was SPOTLESS not a single weed when the Board of Ed took care of this school.
The neglect of this site is the direct result of the "oversight."
The City attorney and the State Health Commissioner should visit this site.
