NHPD, please come and write tickets ASAP at the "Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer" on Townsend Ave. between Sound View Terrace and Upson Terrace. You will make tons of money while helping to keep our children and all citizens safer.
We took some videos but this "SMART" unit is presently only programmed to flash "35" at any driver exceeding 35 MPH so all the speeders incl. school bus drivers and the taxi driver blasting 70+ MPH back from the airport don't get accounted for in the news...YET!
There's a similar "clicket" nearby on Townsend Ave, I think, that talks about how simple traffic calming / chicanes using road paint can be very effective at reducing this type of speeding.
Today there was a terrible accident on Townsend Ave., near Hervey St. Someone on a motorcycle went flying UNDER a moving car, and his motorcycle burst into flames...The rescue people took a very long time to clean it up, but I don't know what happened to the young man under the car. Yes, people need to stop speeding around here. Especially in the summer with people going to Lighthouse ---- I can't even get across the street!
Major traffic calming is needed immediately. If the city can't provide it, neighbors should put out bollards, old couches, etc. This is the only way reduced speeding has been accomplished in many other cities.
Once the city sees a temporary measure work (which it will), they'll come in and put out the official cones/curbs etc.
..."the concept is simply to slow down for safer streets. Whatever else that can be said about them the Woodward Ave. traffic calming roundabouts, and speed traps in general, help accomplish that. Would you have a family suffer the needless tragedy of a fatality because some poor sap might be 10 seconds late for work? Because a miserable 10 SECONDS is about all you'll save speeding down Townsend-while burning up a lot more of your GA$$ money. Who's up for Vehicular Manslaughter and resultant jail time, fines, suspended license, lawsuits, retribution, probation etc. etc?
BTW, thank you for the 'Radar Gun Camera Trailer with Night Vision' that just went up on Townsend. Yes, AFTER the two back to back accidents but it's a start. Now ALL those ignorant speeding LAW BREAKERS can be ticketed automatically by mail.
How much $$$ will those speeding ticket(s) set you back these day's for going 50-60 in a 30 mph zone and how much will your insurance go up?"
Yeah, and a great feature of the new dual radar/dual camera trailers is that they look like they're turned off but still nail speeders by taking pictures in either direction, day or night, and surprise tickets get mailed anyway!
In fact, the traffic calming circles on Woodward are not very effective because the curbing is almost flush with the street. Cars run right over it. If you want it to work, you have to have high, well-lit rotaries. The speeders have to lose the underside of their cars. Then, they'll stop!!
This fine citizen hurtled his 7,000 pound Ford Excursion past us at approx 60 mph on Townsend...only to have to brake heavily and sit at the Main St. red light. We drove the 30 mph speed limit, caught the green light right behind him and got his tag:[content blocked by administrator] (with tinted/smoke plastic cover).

Also, please be sure the "SMART" unit and your radar guns are recorded as properly calibrated so jokers cant get off on that technicality.

The speed limit is 30 MPH but the average on the section by the Townsend mansion is way to fast at about 55 MPH!
Slow down people or you're going to get traffic calming roundabouts like on Woodward Avenue.

I'll say it again....four way stop with red blinking light at Townsend and Upson.
THEN...roundabouts a few times south of that...clearly by Hervey and towards Nathan Hale school.
