Description
We live on 2 ½ acres of woodlands in Pinellas County, surrounded on all sides by public property – to include a drainage canal with vegetation, a retention pond with surrounding foliage and wetland/wooded areas. Due to our location at the end of a street and surrounding by public nature-preserved land on three sides, we have an abundance of animal, plant and insect pests – more so than most properties within a densely populated county like Pinellas.
The mosquito population in our area is out of control. Between the county-owned wetlands to the left and backside of our property (backs up to the new section of Bryan Dairy), main drainage ditch running along the entire front side of our property and the city-owned retention pond to the right of us, this area is an intense breeding ground for mosquitoes. The neighborhood to the South East of us and the North West of the retention pond also suffer from this area of this dense mosquito breeding area on public land. We were here when the mosquito spraying truck came through the neighborhood. It went to the end of 60th Street and turned around (dead end). The city-controlled gate around the retention pond was not opened so they could drive around the pond and spray (even though they do go in and mow around the pond). Also, the wetlands and drainage ditch did not receive any treatment. This area is desperately in need of additional, more aggressive treatment to control the mosquito population. If you look at an areal view of our property you will see landscape I have described. With so much stagnant water on publicly-owned property, we are unable to be outside without fiercely getting bit by mosquitoes.

A. All day, all the time but gradually gets worse throughout the day. By evening they are fierce, especially with rains/humidity adding to standing water in surrounding areas.

A service request about the mosquito problem in your area has been entered into our system; our technician should be there within one working day depending on their work load. They will inspect the property and surrounding neighborhood to determine the source of the problem and will take the necessary action to correct the problem; whenever possible we try to target mosquitoes in the aquatic juvenile stage to control them at the source.
If we cannot get into the property due to locked gates, then please check for anything that may be holding rainwater as mosquitoes will breed in containers as small as a bottle cap. We’ll be checking the area surrounding the property for anything that may be contributing to the problem, and will take the necessary steps to eliminate or treat the source.
If you are at the property when the technician arrives, please take the opportunity to talk to them about your concerns. If you are not at the property when they arrive, a card will be left providing you with detailed information on our handling of your request.
If there are any other questions or concerns you may have please call us at 727- 464-7503 or visit our website at: http://www.pinellascounty.org/publicworks/mosquito/default.htm
