Nothing wrong with the road. There is much more to this accident that the road design. You can't speed making that turn!!!! But from the damage on the cars you can tell that the Cops was doing more than 40 miles an hour, A LOT MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The light would have been flashing red at that time of night on the street where the two teens came from. THEY should have stopped and made sure it was clear to enter Route 1. The cops may have been speeding, but they still had right-of-way.
The police officer was doing 95 MPH. You cannot gage his speed when he is coming straight at you, there is no perspective, so the miscalculation the unfortunate teenagers made that tragically ended their young lives could have been made by the most experienced driver. Respectfully submitted, the police ought to slow down, but they enforce the law so who is going to stop them?

On many roads in New Jersey no left turns are permitted. One has to get into a left turn lane, on the right, and then wait for a light at a crossover. It always tried my patience until I realized how many accidents were being prevented. Route 1 is crazy. Eliminate left turns! The two-way suicide lane is no solution. Who thought that up? Use the space for a bike lane.
Police car video of the crash. You can see the police car is going in excess of 100 MPH and does not have flashing lights or siren on. Prosecutors think they were racing coming back from a mutual aid call in West Haven - that's why criminal charges were filed. Lowering the speed limit to 20 mph on a US highway would not fix that problem.
There is nothing wrong with the design of this road nor the intersection. This intersection was redesigned several years prior to the accident that everyone is talking about. The road design had NOTHING to do with the roadway

Most recently a double-fatal.
Would not have occurred if the street had been properly designed.
