Description
Dangerous Intersection Markings.
Drivers on Shades Crest, approaching this intersection from either direction, can’t see cars on the other side of the intersection until they are in the intersection. The steep grade of Shades Crest immediately east/down-hill of the intersection is the reason.
When drivers heading east reach the intersection and bear left onto Alexander, they are exposed blindly to cars heading west, up the steep, unseen part of Shades Crest - and vice-versa.
This used to be managed with a solid double yellow line on Shades Crest that went all the way through the intersection. That line was paved over a few years ago leaving a gap at the intersection.
This week, the danger was increased. The yellow line on the downhill part of Shades Crest was further blacked out - and - a new double yellow line segment has been added on Alexander (visible in the picture). Alexander now looks like the natural extension of the road past the intersection.
We can expect to see head-on and T-bone crashes at this intersection if this marking scheme is not corrected.

We sincerely appreciate your concern, John. There are times when the City is not able to accommodate a citizen request for a variety of reasons, and we understand that decision may result in disappointment or frustration. Since our Traffic Engineering department has made a decision to convert the intersection to an All-Way Stop, we are going to close this request. You may reach out to our Traffic Engineering Department at 256-427-6850 should you wish to discuss this further.
Thank you,
Your Huntsville Connect Customer Service Team
