Description
The intersection of Bergen Avenue and Academy Street is a busy intersection with high levels of traffic, particularly pedestrians. Although the new dedicated left turn lanes have helped, as a motorist, it is difficult to make left turns from Bergen onto Academy, or right turns from Academy onto Bergen, due to the high volume of pedestrian crossings. However, as a pedestrian, it is an important crossing in a central area approaching a heavily utilized commercial corridor, and the safe crossing of pedestrians should be promoted and maintained.

A. Consider a lead pedestrian interval or dedicated pedestrian signal phase to separate crossings of pedestrians and turning vehicles, if traffic permits the signal timings.

This and other high pedestrian-traffic intersections would be ideal for the "Barnes dance" all-ways method of crossing, which is both faster and safer for pedestrians and motorists. See belwo:
