South-bound traffic has always been allowed to continue, as long as the street isn't blocked off by construction. It has always been a weird intersection, and if you're not from here, it is more confusing. That should be a custom sign with the arrow curving to the left before pointing up. Wasn't the older sign that way, with an attached arrow pointing for a left turn as well?

You are correct about the sign formerly having two arrows. It isn’t very clear from my picture, but the “straight” arrow has been very neatly covered over, leaving the left arrow intact. The lane marking on the ground has not been altered.

It may be that our sign experts feel that having only left-pointing arrows is more clear than the bendy arrow from before. But that will confuse locals who expect to be able to continue south-bound, and now feel they are being forced to turn left onto Hillsborough.

I’m guessing the straight arrow was removed/covered because that section of street is going to be closed in order to accommodate the construction of Block 83 on the left and its parking deck on the right. Don’t know if they’ll paint over the street arrow or let it go.

The straight arrow on the sign was removed due to the upcoming detour where Boylan Street will be closed. The straight arrow pavement marking will be removed this week.
