There must be some way to pave a RR crossing so that the freeze/thaw cycle combined with snow plow action doesn't tear up the road so badly.
If you ride a road bike, I'd recommend that you take Chapel or James if at all possible.
Would it at least be possible for someone from the city (or not...) to come down here with a can of white spray paint and highlight the ridges of asphalt? Parts of it are pretty darn pointy.

I took another look and the Grand Ave RR crossing is much better than it was when I had last seen it. The jagged asphalt that used to stick up on either side of the rails was ground down and patched up (THANK YOU!).
It's still pretty abrupt due to the inner rails (I'm not sure what the technical term is), however, which stick up at least an inch higher than the regular rails. The next time Grand Ave gets resurfaced, I would very much like to see CT DOT install the rubber or concrete/metal treatment for this rail crossing such as what they use at the newer maintenance crossings at Union Station and elsewhere in Connecticut. For now drivers seem to be well aware of the need to slow down to a near stop here (see video).
