No movement on this issue. Left turn lanes on Cedar Avenue N & S bound at 42nd Street, along with a left turn arrow would be very helpful and also would keep traffic flowing better.
It took me three light changes to make a left hand turn from north-bound Cedar onto west-bound 42nd on Thursday coming home from work, as there were 3 cars ahead of me making lefts...and only one per light was able to get through. When it was my turn, some woman ran the yellow light to get through and almost T-boned me in the intersection.
No left turn lights/lanes at 42nd is why MANY vehicles turn left off of Cedar into neighborhoods on 47th, 45th, 44th and 43rd...so they don't have to fight the lights at 42nd...I am sure those neighborhoods would appreciate LESS traffic funneling onto their streets, as well!
Hello? 311...
What is Public Works saying about this intersection and the possibility of left turn lanes on Cedar both north and southbound?
Reference # of 285767 - please advise. Thanks for your help on this.
I disagree that we want a left turn signal on 42nd and Cedar because not having one slows traffic down. As a resident on Cedar Ave I'm concerned that the easier traffic will flow down Cedar, the more drivers will take the route as a short cut in and out of downtown. I think we need to not encourage that so that our street doesn't turn into a freeway.
Those of us who have a reason to drive in our neighborhood need to be willing to put up with some delays so those just passing through will stay on 35W or Hiawatha.
Well, as implemented near 38th and 48th, traffic is calmed by people slowing to take right turns as well. The lanes serve the purpose of making traffic flow more predictable and thus safer. Having been rear-ended on Cedar while waiting to take a left turn, I view it as a safety issue. Also, it would cut down on the amount of red-light runners who hold up opposing greens as three or four vehicles clear a left turn.
I agree that a left turn lane and arrow would increase safety at this intersection, and make traffic move more smoothly. It would also improve pedestrian safety. People speed between lights when they feel frustrated; they run lights when they can't get through on green.

I don't believe that's what we're asking for. We need a long term plan to add a LEFT TURN LANE. This is something that the City will have to work on with the County. I'd like to see something in CLIC so it is at least on the radar.
Thank you for your comments on this issue. Our traffic department has been out to monitor this area multiple times and does not feel that a left turn arrow is warranted. Left-turning vehicles can usually complete their movement within 1-2 cycles, even under heavy opposing traffic volumes.
a designated turn lane is one thing we need here to prevent a lot of the dangerous parking lane cut-around activity. This is ridiculously dangerous for cyclists, pedestrian crossing AND those of us that follow the law and stay in the travel lane.
If the traffic count continues to increase we WILL need a turn light before long. This intersection is a safety disaster and NEEDS to be made safer!
Any movement on this? The parking lane cut-around is still dangerous here... 1. dangerous for cars opposing the direction of a turning car, since they cannot always see if a car is cutting around before turning left. 2. dangerous for cyclists in the parking lane and pedestrians in the crosswalk. A dedicated left-turn cycle is not necessarily needed, but striping for a dedicated left turn lane would create predictability and better sight lines for those traveling through the intersection.
