Agreed!!! Well written! It is terrible to have to drag my family through that. Not just the mall but even Wal-Mart and the Hospital! It is bad for our health and it also just stinks! I love walking around smelling like I smoke it is just wonderful!

Both are very valid issues Vlasic...these 2 things are part of what makes PA have a bad image, mostly the spitting and intoxication

I dont know whats worse ?? the smoking or the spitting !!I'D really like to see some fines handed out, word would get around and maybe ppl would stop ! I was at Walmart last night and a City Police was actually giving cars tickets for parking in the handicap stalls, he ticketed all of them !! I was silently cheering ! Maybe if the city police make their presence known in a few places, it would stop? but probably not!

I was just at Wal-Mart today and 2 ladies or should I say women were smoking right on the front side walk by the pop machines. I said excuse me and they looked at me like I had 12 eyes looking at them. I went and told customer service and they asked them to move. But really do I want my 3 year old walking through that. Not really...show some manners and respect people. I agree the spitting is disgusting as well.

My sources now tell me it's 15' not 10'. That makes it even worse! ;)

Yes, the smoking is bad, the spitting is worse, but worst of all is the public urination, in broad daylight no less. Walking into Wal-mart, or perhaps the mall, and some wino whips it out and takes a whiz right there in front of you, and anyone else who happens to be about.

I sometimes see young ppl smoking funny-smelling tobacco in front of the mall too. Ironically, it's about half a block from the police station, and these youngsters feel no reluctance to spark up in public, in broad daylight.

i have 4 kids under 5, walking in and out of walmart is horrible! this man in his 50's id put him, was smoking infront of the doors, it was a bad day as it was, but thats not the point. i said cant you read?? the sign CLEARLY says no smoking!! his response NOPE DONT CARE! mind your own f-in business...seriously??? i have a 3 month old, a 17 month old and a 5 year old with asthma!

Hey Gramma! I really don't care who is doing it (we could all be pink, green or blue) the point being is people shouldn't plant themselves in front of the doors smoking where it says not to do so. Especially, when you read comments posted like grow up's people obviously have no respect for anyone in this city.

At the food court entrance to the gateway Mall... it is always full of the street locals smoking and spitting and standing in the way...MR Dione DO YOUR JOB..get rid of these bums...I for one am happy to see Cornerstone being built up as I very rarely go to Gateway and many of my friend also avoid the place...its sad a few bums can spoil it for every one including the business inside

The food court entrance? Listen, I'm 6'2" and 240 lbs, and I'm afraid to use that entrance! I wonder how many thousands of dollars mall merchants lose each year because of all the people [and there are many] who won't go to the gateway mall because of the riff-raff that hang out there?

i dont go to the mall, but if for some reason i HAVE to go there (which isnt often) i leave the kids at home, i dont need them walking through god knows what kind of "smoke" and peoples spit, its nasty and something needs to be done. its making PA look HORRIBLE! i hate going there for the simple fact that i DONT TRUST the riff raff that hangs out there...

The downtown mall is terrible. I went down the elevator one day and I didnt want to touch the buttons. Then I was taking money out of the ATM and a guy spit next to the garbage can. So I was walking to get my haircut at Regis and about 6 gangwannabe's walking side by side walked next to me and bumped me hard enough, that if I was a older person I would have been knocked over. Vlasic, I am over 6'4 and 250lbs as well, sometimes I dont feel safe down there hahaha. A friend of mine works security down there, all they do all day is throw drunks out one door for them to come in the next door. There is nothing more the security guys can do, it takes the management to almost set dress codes in order to go into the mall. The security guys walk out the food court doors, everyone scatters, then all come back when they leave. Another thing, what happened to the police presence downtown? They used to walk downtown all the time, and you never see them anymore. They need a few of them to walk through the mall a few times a day, try and get the cliental a little cleaner. That way a few people might concider go there, but for now I'm sticking to Cornerstone.

I had to go to the mall for some christmas shopping, my daughters wanted the red canadian mitts from Zellers, then i had to use the washroom, so i went to the restrooms by the food court, they were absolutely filthy, a few taps were left running, not enough lighting, dirty diapers on the floor etc, i didnt even want to wash my hands the bathroom was so disgusting. I decided to eat something as I skipped lunch, I sat down and started to eat, as I watched my surroundings, i became extremely nervous, I didnt feel I was safe at all, nor was my purse on the table, every time that door opened I caught a smell of smoke coming in from outside, I ate as fast as i could and left.

Zellers and sears are both so trashy looking, you cant even walk down the aisles in sears. maybe if the mall started with their tenants cleaning up the stores the clientelle would come back ?

Well, Fifi, you couldn't pay me to go into a public washroom in the gateway mall after I've seen some of the things I've seen. I'd sooner foul me trousers, that's no exaggeration.

I think part of it is the PA Syndrome, Walmart suffers from it as well. Go to a similar store in Saskatoon, they're cleaner, less spit, etc. For some reason, we just don't care as much in our home town, not sure why...?

actually the bylaw is 25 feet from any entrances or windows.i smoke but i do agree that ppl need to show some respect for the non-smokers

Well, obviously the bylaw enforcement officers don't frequent these boards. ;)

And I'm not saying start handing out $200 tickets to all the mall staff, but start out by giving them a warning and nicely asking them to smoke a little further from the entrance. And then if they don't comply? Ticket, ticket, ticket! The city needs the money, after all!

See-Click-Fix is apparently not working as intentened. Municipal officials have obviously failed to see this issue, since it has still not been fixed. Why does city council waste time creating bylaws that it has no intentions of enforcing?

Ever notice that the colder it is, the closer to the door the smokers stand? (As if one metre will be warmer than three or four). I have noticed this at Malls, restaurants. stores, shops, houses,.....it doesn't seem to matter where.

Last week I witnessed a man at a local downtown business actually smoking in the doorway of said business. Only thing is, he was smoking pot, not a cigarette. If we can't even keep ppl from smoking dope in front of doorways, what hope do we have of keeping them from smoking cigarettes?
