Why can't Shelton get the downtown traffic lights in sync with one another? Put them in sync and no more traffice jams down there. If money is an issue, start ticketing the people blocking the intersections.
Unfortunately the state of Connecticut owns and operates the traffic lights. A recent timing study deemed the operation of the lights as adequate and no changes are necessary. I do agree with you as well. If people stopped breaking simple traffic rules it would be a lot better than it currently is. The boxes are painted all we need now are a few of the officers to enforce the heavy fines.
Traffic Counts and turning movements are being compiled at this moment (interrupted by recent fire) and the Shelton PD is working with CT DOT Traffic and their Regional Planning Organization to re-sync the lights for better flow.
This is a short-term solution. Much of the congestion is being caused by new housing development on Canal St. The real solution is to install video detection loop which actually will synchro the lights. All that can be done now is a best guess on timing as the lights have no way to "talk" to each other. This interim solution should take about another month to compile and implement. Adjustments to those timings will go on for another 60-90 days.
