Description
I would like to request a stop sign and crossing guard at the intersection of Pavonia Ave. and Tonnelle in Journal Square. This crosswalk is utilized every day by parents, children and commuters and there is currently no stop sign. There is a school and daycare on the next block over. I cross the street with my child every day and no one ever stops. Sometimes I'll be in the middle of the intersection and the car will speed up to make sure they get across the intersection before I can block their way. This is extremely dangerous and several other parents and commuters have the same concern. I demand a stop sign and also a crossing guard M-F. Simply having pedestrian cross signage is not enough. This is a busy intersection and drivers will not stop for you. Even JC Police cars won't stop for me.

It is particularly problematic that cars are speeding up on pedestrians already on the crosswalk, having to cut on the opposite lane when the visibility is far from ideal as it’s on a hill, putting everyone in danger.

This intersection is close to my house and I walk to Journal Square on Pavonia.
There are stop signs on both eastbound and westbound Pavonia Avenue.
The problem is with Tonnele Ave.
Cars do not slow down even though there are signs for pedestrians to cross. And there are lines painted to denote a pedestrian crossing area.

But how do we get the city to install this quickly?

@Basia, the sign I suggested is a little different. The ones there now are pretty much basic signs indicating a crosswalk that just happen to have a flashing border to make them more visible. An RRFB works like in this video:

@ Basia. I just heard back from the city that they will be installing an RRFB at this intersection in the next 2-3 weeks (this timing may push slightly due to COVID-19-related delays in the manufacture, delivery, or installation of the RRFB). I'm generally supportive of speed humps but if my personal experience is any indication, the city will likely say that this section of Tonnele doesn't qualify because there are too many vehicles. Per NJ road design standards, if there are more than 3,000 vehicles per day, the road does not qualify for a speed hump. Unfortunately, the poor design of the road encourages many cars to use the road, which then makes the road ineligible for certain things that would slow down traffic.
I think this is part of a larger problem in our part of Jersey City (I'm in Journal Square between Kennedy and Tonnele) of too many people using our neighborhood as a cut through to other parts of the city who don't care about the safety and well-being of the people who live here. I've lost count of the number of times I've been honked at for driving the speed limit.

We must also make sure we follow up on the study the city said they would do.
