sorry, mobile ap seems to have a serious bug with making comments. so, another picture for this... took the time to inspect this issue a little further. from the surface, to the bottom of this road hole, I measured 9 feet 6 inches straight down. traffic at this location prevented me from taking more than a quick measurement. see picture.

that's a deep issue!

I noticed that someone put a small steel plate over the hole and stuck drop&go asphalt around the edges. I hope that a solution is being engineered based on investigating. A hole this deep would surely result in severe injury if not death. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

9/11/2013 - Richmond DPU Mgmt Team noted they installed a steel plate at this hole on 9/9/2013. They also noted this cave-in tested as positive and that DPU Wastewater Mgmt Team will need to repair the subsurface piping here - they have this placed on the repair list - rtt
