Today, this toxic blue-green algae is also in the Southeast Lobe of Harbor Isle Lake in large amounts-- spanning the backyard lots of 1737 to 1785 72nd Ave NE or more depending on wind speed and direction. See attached photo.
This is a wide-spread and long-enduring issue for the neighborhood. Harbor Isle Lake has been experiencing these large toxic blue-green algae blooms since --- July 2018 ---. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection confirmed it to be toxic in early January 2019 after a resident called it in.
A Stormwater Crew will not resolve this issue.
- Mr. Carlos Frey, City Engineer is the Harbor Isle Lake Project Contact
- Mr. Claude Tankersley, Public Works Administrator
- Mayor Rick Kriseman of St. Petersburg
All of these individuals have been e-mailed about this ongoing issue for more than a year. They have not responded to questions regarding the City's lack of response, dissemination of public info, lack of water quality testing data, thorough engineering analysis, lack of any explanation about the current nano-bubble aeration system installed, its design choice and its effectiveness. The system has been running for 2 months and appears deficient/undersized and not working at all to reduce these toxic blooms.
I'm glad other people are starting to share their photos and highlight this almost 2 years old safety and public health issue.

Additional follow-up for today.
Today, February 17, 2020, toxic blue-green algae was also in the Northwest Lobe of Harbor Isle Lake in large amounts-- again, similar in size to those documented last week between February 11 to February 13. The noxious odor is very strong. There also was an accompanying dead animal odor. Multiple secondary ‘dead animal’ odors have been occurring around the block this past week, mainly in properties that are on/near the lake, where the large blooms have been visible.
Also the bloom still remains at the entrance of the block.
See attached photo collage.
Note: The photo of the NW Lobe has sun glare due to the time day. This makes the blue-green algae appear less, but as an in person observer it was worse than the photo suggests.
