Description

Bull Thistle is growing rampantly along the sidewalk edges where the concrete sidewalk contractor replaced sod after his work this past year on 79th and 80th Avenues in the Fairlawn area.

Q. Please describe the issue.
A. First off, Bull Thistle is a biennial meaning that it's not going away on its own. Secondly, Bull thistle is an invasive species. Bull thistle colonizes areas where vegetation, topsoil, or overburden is removed such as road sides, pastures and ditch banks. It can also be found in hay fields, prairies and woodlands. Livestock do not eat it, giving it an advantage over native species. And finally, because of it's spiny nature, it is a safety hazard to young children playing along the sidewalk or others who may not be wearing protective shoes. I have no idea what kind of sod was specified under the sidewalk project but I can not believe that a certified sod grower would sell a product containing an invasive species. How did this discrepancy slip past the submittal approval process?
