Description
I wanted to report that we have seen rat activity in our basement. We believe this rat entered our house through the sewers. We are currently working with a pest removal company called GreenHow and they encouraged us to report this to the city to get some baits laid out in the sewers. While we have not seen rats in properties around us, the building adjacent to us is unoccupied and the building behind our backyard often keeps their garbage bags on a tree branch as one might do for bears. As a result, we suspect that this could be a larger problem and would ask that baits be placed in the sewers.
On our end, we are getting a smoke test done tomorrow and are continuing to work with GreenHow both to eliminate the rats currently present and to ensure that no rodents enter our property in the future.

Thank you for reporting this issue.
Back in 2015, we had severe rat infestation problems in this area due to what is known as "dumpster alley" off of Dudley Street that area restaurant used. After unsuccessful attempts by the surrounding area residents to control the rat problem individually, the City was kind enough to contract with Waltham Services to bait in private properties around the "Dumpster Alley," The City also set up sewer bait stations as well in the area.
If GreenHow suspects rats are coming in from the sewer, I join the reporter in urging the City to install rat bait stations in the surrounding area as was done in 2015. With less activity in the area restaurants, rats may be foraging for new source of food.
Recently, we had some rat activities in our backyard and I tried unsuccessfully to control it myself. So, I contacted Best Pest Control of Somerville, and Matt came out and inspected my backyard. Fortunately, after a thorough inspection, he didn't find any evidence of active rat activities except for possibly one active burrow. He recommended that I fill all old burrow holes, tamp them down and watch for any new burrows. If that happens, I will take the next remedial steps.
