Descrizione
Residents of the eastern end of Avon St near Pearl St are asking for IMMEDIATE safety measures to ensure the safety of children in the neighborhood. Specifically signs such as the Speed Limit, “SLOW CHILDREN” and/or “Local Traffic only” to curtail cut thru traffic.
Drivers are using Avon St. to "beat the light" at Highland Ave and Medford Street. Many drive at a high rate of speed endangering all residents but especially the many children in this section.
Speed limit for Avon St should be lower than the Pearl St 30 mph sign on the pole at Pearl St and Avon St

We have deployed officers to that location when they are available. I will pass along the request for signage but I have never found these violators to be dissuaded by signage.
Enforcement will be scheduled for speeding. The problem is the traffic apps that people use to navigate the city. They (Waze)direct drivers down secondary roadways and most of the time it doesn’t even save one minute off their commute.
A common redirection we see is the apps take drivers off Medford street and redirects them to Emerald street from Pearl to . This doesn’t save even one minute from the normal route of Medford st eastbound to the Fellsway. We need our legislators to pass some real laws that change the way these companies direct traffic. Many of these secondary roads such as Avon st are not equipped to handle this volume of traffic.

Some of these drivers put the gas pedal to the floor when they turn onto Avon St. This is a dangerous situation, one to be attended to before a kid is hit.

WAZE is not the problem. I've tested it on different days, different times and never has it diverted me to Avon st. If, going west on Medford St, with destination across the Fellsway, I purposely turn left onto Pearl, WAZE directs me to Devir St, AVOIDING AVON ST. which would be the fastest way back onto my route. It does it time after time.
Yes, there is not a constant stream of speeders on Avon St so the problem is difficult.
But at least put up some signs. What department is it that would put up these signs, and that your initial response mentioned?
Thank you staying on top of this but the danger to children on this block of Avon St continues.

Thank you for having Police vehicles parked for a while on Avon St. Not much traffic while here but maybe a deterrence to the few drivers.
Neighbors have asked about having speed bumps installed. Advice on that?

The "Slow Children" sign that was installed n 2020 after this issue was re[ported was removed and should be put back. (See my 8/9/2020 comment.) I'm thinking when Street Sweeping Info signs were installed the more important safety sign was taken down.
It should be restored.
