I understand there was an accident at this crosswalk just this afternoon. One car appropriately stopped for pedestrians and the trailing car was speeding too fast to stop. This entire Newark Avenue hill is a huge problem. The sooner traffic calming measures are instituted (bike lanes, raised crosswalks, actual traffic enforcement etc.) the better. The flashing lights are better than nothing but 50% of vehicles are driving too fast to stop even if they had a mind to do so.

We have added this location on the City’s on-going list for Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs), which are user-actuated flashing pedestrian warning signs. The RRFBs are scheduled to be installed over the next 2 months.

I didn't see it happen (heard it though!), but it's consistent with a pattern at this crosswalk where, due to high speeds on Newark Ave, when a driver stops for pedestrians in the crosswalk, the driver behind them rear ends them. Obviously there is potential for the front car to be pushed into the crosswalk/pedestrians. Someone else in my building reports this having happened in 2019 when she was trying to cross.

Looking forward to whatever other redesigns / traffic calming might be coming down the pike for this stretch of Newark Ave. A business (a grocery/deli, I think?) is opening on the ground floor of 361 Newark, and this couple-block stretch is now 100's of people's front doorstep, so the unstriped 4-lane-wide status quo + 6th street slip lane is not ideal. Thanks for your work on this.

The RRFB's are a stop-gap measure, at best. Even with the lights flashing at other crossings on Newark, drivers either don't stop or try to bypass those that have to let pedestrians cross. This stretch of Newark up to JSQ continues to be hazardous to pedestrians, drivers, and bikers. It sounds like a redesign is coming in the future. In the meantime, we need traffic enforcement and ticketing to prevent a tragedy. Thank you.

I just crossed here. A Via van slowed for me but didn't stop, SUV driver behind honked and was cheating on the double yellow, looking to pass the Via bc it slowed to like 15-20mph.

After they both passed me, the SUV passed the Via on the right while they were both moving, on what is supposed to be a 1-lane (each way) road, almost hitting a cyclist who was also going the same direction and was on the right side of the road.

It is just so messy down there, the shape of the road tells people it's a highway, and they lose their minds when someone stops for pedestrians in a crosswalk or, to make a left across oncoming traffic. It would be amazing to build it down to like a 15mph road, like Grove by City Hall. Hopefully that is what's being looked at. Thanks again.

A new configuration of Newark Avenue was installed in summer 2022 to shorten the distance that pedestrians cross live vehicular traffic through protected bike lanes. While this may not completely resolve the issue, some improvement has been realized. The Department will continue to monitor conditions at this location and may take further action in the future.
