Description
Remove the pedestrian beg button from the Buena Vista/Broadway crossing.
Countless kids cross this way to/from Edison Elementary. And kids don't use the button ... they just walk with the green light, like any normal person would.
Turns out, the light usually turns red half way across, causing real potential harm to the children of our community.
Frankly, it's inexcusable we have ANY beg buttons as we claim we're a walkable city, but on a small intersection that students take to elementary school, it's particularly inexcusable.

Re "unnecessary traffic delays", during the day the light is on a schedule. That schedule should include automatic walk signals - doing so would not impact the frequency or duration of car green signals. It's only out of regular hours where it's triggered by cars.
I would know, I (try to) cross the intersection several times a day. On foot, not in my speeding car. Not just once when leaving the island and once when coming back.
Second, if a little "traffic delays" slows cars down at this particular intersection, it wouldn't be such a bad thing. After all, a car killed a bicyclist right there a few months back. "Traffic delays" are a small price to pay for "alive citizens."

Thank you for reporting your concerns about street safety in Alameda. Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.
The City is working on a policy regarding signal operations and pedestrian detection and timing at signalized intersections. We expect this to be on the agenda at the next Transportation Commission meeting on July 28.
