I reported this same smell last year and left it on this site for over a year. I got one or two emails about it and a phone call from the health department who supposedly went to "check it out." The official tried to convince me I was smelling my neighbor's drier sheets or mudflats. Said he "couldn't find anything." It used to waft over Target during the day and the highway as well. Whomever is dumping/burning off chemicals switched to doing it late a night instead of during the day when everyone noticed it. My bet is on the metals processing plant near exit 9. Smells like acetone, etc. Sickening.

I have been smelling this noxious night odor in East Rock for the last 3 years. What is the odor?

That odor has been present on and off for the past 5 years! I think it comes from the scrap metal plant near exit 8/9 on 91. Alternately, could it be coming from New Haven's garbage mountain near the highway? It smells like acetone or other high strength toxic cleaner. I've asked the Town of North Haven to investigate (he told me I was probably smelling my neighbor's dryer sheets...umm, yeah), the DEP refused to investigate. Occasionally, it wafts over the Target parking lot. You can watch customers walking in with their hands over their faces. Smells like cancer. I think since we are on the "wrong" side of the tracks in North Haven, no one is interested in investigating.

We are trying to delineate issues that are current and need the city's attention to resolve. Any issues prior to 2013 are being closed. If your issue remains and needs to be addressed by the city, please either re-open or open as a new See Click Fix issue. Thanks.
