Agree. Given that new curbs and infrastructure take time to plan and install, I would advocate for any number of "temporary" solutions, like you suggest, until the street can be made permanently self enforcing (also known as traffic calmed). The City recently did this on Chapel Street until funding could be secured for permanent roadway reconfiguration.

Thinking towards the long-term, getting the neighbors together to submit a complete streets request form would also help. I have outlined some of the reasons for this and methods for approach at http://www.seeclickfix.com/issues/120178.

I'm too an advocate for traffic calming and certainly am glad to represent our neighbors concerns on this issue. The recent accident referred to and indeed traffic included many other factors than road design.

Per the BOA and constituent lead Complete Streets legislation and policy implementation, the still relatively new Complete Streets Manual specifically recommends speed humps in conjunction with other traffic calming and speed mitigation efforts.

P.S. My theory on that accident - Im willing to bet that the car that was stolen was speeding, something happened to cause their accident. Teen driving by (why at that hour though is a concern) saw the accident, stopped but was getting chased by foot by the thieves in the other car to hijack his and he got spooked causing his accident - or was rubbernecking and lost control of his car and cause his own accident.

I agree that we need to take action to slow traffic on this street. The residents on Yale Avenue have been talking a lot about how fast people drive down this road. Speed bumps are a possibility, as is a stop sign where West Elm connects with Yale Avenue.

It would be nice to have more enforcement of the existing speed limits. I recognize that requires resources, in terms of allocating traffic police to the neighborhood, but this street has become dangerous. One couple on the stretch of Yale Avenue that bends westward toward West Rock have told me that several cars drive right off the road and into the park each year!

There you will find a “Complete Streets Manual” and “Project Request Form”. On October 23, 2008, The New Haven Board of Aldermen unanimously passed an order creating a nine member Complete Streets Steering Committee to guide the development of the following elements for the purpose of addressing the status of city streets: policy document, design manual, public process, educational campaign and traffic enforcement.

A focal point is to include feedback and ideas for street improvements from members of the community. You will also find previously submitted project requests from other community members. If this issue still exists please submit a “Project Request Form”. As a resident, you are not required to design anything. Instead, use the "Complete Streets Manual" as a showcase of the different types of traffic calming measures that may be used.
