There need to be blocks or a curb that separate parking from bike lane. Was almost hit today. Had to slam on brakes and hop curb into pedestrian path because a driver rapidly pulled into the bike lane so he could then reverse into the spot. This happens a lot. Usually they don’t almost hit me, but this is an accident waiting to happen. If I would’ve been going west I I wouldn’t have had time and space to avoid the accident and would’ve been severely injured.

Your report will help inform the City of Alameda’s work to achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities and severe injuries. We will use street safety reports, including yours, in combination with crash data and equity indicators to prioritize and design street safety investments. This evaluation will generally happen on an annual basis, with some exceptions for clear and pressing trends. Issues that the City deems to be immediate safety concerns will be elevated for quick action.

We are glad you are ok after your scary experience! The city has not typically placed barriers between parking and separated bike lanes to avoid tripping hazards for people exiting vehicles on the passenger side. Our standards are continuing to evolve, so this feedback is helpful.
As part of this year's paving management project, the City will be re-striping some of the lane lines along Shore Line and Westline, which will make the boundaries more visible, and adding concrete curbs in the buffer areas at select locations. (The re-striping will also upgrade Shore Line's marked crosswalks to high visibility ladder markings.)
