With the State Street bridge out, there is definitely more traffic going down Mechanic and up Nash.

I've been meaning to report this issue for MONTHS - thank you! A stop sign there is really needed.

Yes, it is bad. People come ZOOMING at high speeds from Mechanic and almost kill us locals.
The traffic is greatly increased there because of the State Street bridge being out.
NOT a good scene.
And now there's a lot more drug activity around Eagle/Mecahnic at night...

This is one of the more dangerous parts of my daily bike commute!

There has been neither a fix to this nor a comment explaining why it has not been changed.

Another solution besides stop signs: This Image showing example of "temporary" curb extensions used widely in Europe and highly effective when the city budget can't support immediate changes. These last 5-10 years and are a fraction of the cost of permanent infrastructure, and if effective, can eventually be replaced by something nicer (like the bump out the city put in at the corner of Nash and Lawrence for example). Stop signs have been shown to not make a huge impact in most instances.

In this case, I think a stop sign is a cheaper and easier potential fix for speeding through the intersection than building curb extensions. It would be nice if someone in the city (alderwoman or otherwise) could acknowledge this problem.

It's like moving mountains to get the city to install stop signs anywhere in the city. They say that stop signs should only be used if there is a visibility problem, not as a traffic calming measure. I tend to disagree. I'll forward this to traffic and parking and see if they would be willing to install a sign. I think this location is justifiable particularly because of its proximity to the East Rock Community Magnet School.

Requesting a stop sign is a process, involving several different stages in order to determine if the location being requested is warranted. The first step in the process would be to present a request to your Alderperson. He or she will review the information and follow up by contacting the Transportation, Traffic and parking Department. Once the request is received by the department, staff will review the request and determine its viability based on guidelines given to us in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, issued by the Federal Highway Administration. Intersections must meet federal criteria in order to install a stop sign. If the warrant reveals the criteria is met, the department will submit a final recommendation to the Traffic Authority for approval and installation. Isn't this supposeded to be one venue to contact my alderwoman? I know Matt Smith and Justin Elicker have used it. Anyone that doesn't think a stop sign is not warranted has never been to thi intersection!

I know that Jessica has been working on this issue for quite some time. I'm not sure what the status is on it, but am happy to check. Traffic and Parking is doing good work in the city, but I have to disagree with them on their approach to this intersection. I think it's a no brainer. It's a confusing, dangerous intersection next to a school that deserves a stop sign and one should be put in as soon as possible.

I have expressed my interest in having a stop sign here numerous times to Transportation, Traffic and Parking. There is a stop sign for the Eagle Street (coming from Mechanic) side of this intersection in the proposed plans for the new signage around the school. I don't know what the timeline is for the new signage given the change in the school's scheduled opening. T,T,&P, do you know when the new signs will go up?

It doesn't seem like we need to wait for the school to re-open to put up the sign. It has been needed for a long time and is a dangerous intersection.

Thanks for installing an all-way stop here! Could a stop bar get painted though? I nearly flew through the stop sign when it first went up because I wasn't looking for it. A stop bar with stop painted across the top would help!

Thanks for the new signs. We feel safer already, and they're just in time for the playground installation. I won't reopen this thread, I promise!
