I agree, I see people running this stop sign all the time. Unless you live on Nash or Eagle you probably wouldn't know the sign was there. I really worry about the children going to and from school. There's surely a way to save this beautiful old tree and make the stop sign visible. Put the sign before the tree??

I agree that this is a bad situation. I drop off a teacher there and have almost gone through the intersection many times not seeing the stop sign until the last minute. Maybe the sign could be moved closer to the street. That might not be a lot of work. I wouldn't like to see anything happen to the beautiful tree on the corner. It's definitely a safety issue.

I almost blew through this stop sign last week. Is there a way to put a sign in front of tree ( stop sign or warning)? Very dangerous, especially near a school.

Is that East Rock School there? There are a lot of corners in the city where low tree branches block important traffic signs,, like "one way" signs, etc. They need to have tree trimmers patrol to cut all low branches. People trying to walk on the sidewalks have to duck under the branches too.

In this case, it is a giant and beautiful tree that is right in front of the stop sign. You can't see the sign until the last second.

In most cases it is a full grown tree. When the City plants the saplings, they don't consider that in a few years it's going to be a grown big tree. Now, where's a photo? Do you mean it's the trunk that is in front of the signs? or branches? Most of the places it is possible to prune the low branches.

When didn't someone phone the police,alderwoman, or traffic division?

The trunk is blocking the sign. I walked down the street to take a picture for reference and as I was walking back, someone ran the stop sign!

Id propose they repaint all the lines around this intersection and the school. Can't see cross walks nor middle line (it is two way traffic) and the stop text is faded. Another idea would be to place a freestanding stop sign in center of Nash street (north facing on north side) using a concrete base, the backside could also have yellow sign for school zone cross walk for those turning onto northbound Nash.

The tree has been inspected and prioritized for action.

I wouldn't want to see this beautiful tree cut down. Why not just simply move the sign?

It may take awhile for the tree to be removed. Can a tempority stop sign with better visibility be installed?

This was first reported on January 19, 2015. The city did not respond until today. Just to let you know I called the police last night and today. I also called another city department phone number 203 946-8076. In the future if it is a safety issue use the phone, then post and mention who was called in.

I think the stop sign should be moved,, not the tree removed. We need our good trees whenever possible. they help the atmosphere, give shade in the sun,, etc. It would be much simpler to just move the stop sign to in front of the tree.

Hello, The Sycamore tree located at this issue even though it looks healthy, has multiple hollow spots that could compromise its structural integrity and is the main reason for posting it for removal.

I have already contacted Bruce - there are certain traffic engineering rules for the distance from stop signs and location - would be very hard to move the sign with current curbs and engineering.

Can a temporary sign be put up until the tree is removed, It is dangerous the way it is now.

I have lived on this corner for 8 months, and yes it is definitely dangerous. That said, it has been like this for at least that long, probably many years, so a few more weeks doesn't seem that big of deal to me. Every day people fly through this intersection, amazing there having been more accidents - especially considering east bound and west bound head towards each other as 1-ways, and Nash north side is 2-way, where as south is 1-way. Very confusing. I think some fresh street paint to repaint a stop line with text on road, new yellow double lines, and new crosswalks would make this intersection more safe than cutting down the tree- especially for children going to/from school
