This is unacceptable, yet it is tolerated throughout the city. The first "fix" should be the city clarifying its policy on sidewalk parking and sending a letter to all police officers, administrators and contractors regarding the actual policy. The second "fix" would be the creation of a special city ordinance, with a higher fine attached.

I almost went back to get the officers name, but I was so irritated that I feared I would be too confrontational. The issue to be fixed is that the officer completely ignored the fact that a baby stroller was forced into one of the busiest streets in the City so that a van (less than 10 feet from legal parking on the street) would be safe. The officer should have requested the van be moved. It is that simple, but in Fair Haven it seems that quality of life issues get ignored by the police ALL of the time.

I think this should be held open until the City replies--and AT&T as well. I just added AT&T to the list of people getting notified.

I just saw it on the NHI & think we should keep it there a little longer, especially with the nonsense of our extremely negligent city failing to pave Whitney even in our "boom years".

P.s. I think the issue to fix is for the Police/City to acknowledge this practice & propose a fix. Currently the City does allow this type of behavior, but it is unacceptable. The City should respond to this with some solution.

Open it shall stay...I agree that the City and more importantly the PD should be responding since an officer was the one who also told me to use the street to pass instead of the sidewalk! At this point I don't expect much from either the City or PD...they have this "Safe Streets" program, but who exactly are they trying to keep the streets safe for????

It seems like these problems are growing...maybe because there are more active citizens actually calling the City on this stuff??

The City Hall staff I know are over-worked & not able to respond to everything, so only the stuff we harp on gets through. low signal to noise ratio.

Street Smarts is a good program! but it just has to be used by everyone. I think that is off to a good start--and of course, it's one department behind that, and another behind this ;-).

Sidewalks are a vestige of a bygone era. Find a better place to walk,better yet, find a better city to walk in! I regret more than anyone the loss of civility . Do your own research, many European cities allow parking on what would otherwise be sidewalks to free the streets for traffic. Quinnipiac Avenue is a horse and buggy access road and any changes in the planning will only enrich the Mayors friends.

Typical. This is indicative of how NHPD officers treat the law-abiding public. Several times I drove by the Chapel St. curbing construction lately in Fair Haven, the officer stared aggressively into my car, trying to intimidate me, for no reason - I was going slow enough, and don't look like a criminal, whatever that means. It made me want to get out and get his badge #. I wish you had, though. Really, it would be easy enough for the NHPD to figure out who was on duty yesterday, if they feel like controlling their officers a little bit better. I swear, this city is @#$% backwards, and have no idea how it's even come this far.

They are public servants, to protect and serve the public , to answer to the taxpayers and voters of the City of New Haven.
They are concerned only with the small group of elected officials and their contributors or business associates in your ward ,Or the ward they are patroling and pulling OT at. Like State Rep Staples and his long time real estate supporters, Does your Ward Alder sit on the Human Services Bd ? you can spot many a cop up there with the Mayor Appointed leader with 5-6 alders denying or approving jobs. They forget just what their job is and play strong arm ward political thugs.
The City needs a stronger Iternal Affairs unit that makes a strike against unerasable, it can bring some much needed accountability into the department.
Still hats off to the few good cops out there,unless being honest is just to look for a buyout from the corrupt system .....

The officers on the New Haven Police Dept. are sure not what they used to be. I have a couple of families on my block who think it is perfectly OK to put their children in the street to play basketball. This has become another "acceptable" mode of behavior in our society. As kids we were never allowed to play in the street and traffic was a lot lighter then. When I phoned the police and worked with them to get this blocking of the street addressed and to get these kids out of an unsafe place, they acted like I and my other neighbors were the problem. The New Haven Police do NOTHING to enforce the ordinances. The neighborhood is like a park and has deteriorated because of selfish neighbors and the non-committal police and politicians in New Haven. It is so easy for me to heaven forbid hit one of these kids with my car that it horrifies me. I am selling my house and will be moving very soon now.

I think that the police Lieutenant who let me and my other neighbors down should move to New Haven. I have a nice house I will sell him. Then he too will have the luxury of paying high taxes to live in a "park" in a town that has taken a drastic nose dive in recent years.

Police officers should have to live in the town they work in. Many of these officers are not invested in New Haven or what goes on here and thus have become lax in their enforcement of the law.

Wow , some of these cops have such bad consciences that living here is an impossibility. - and would you really want one for a neighbor ? obviously no...
Another part is that the neighborhood realtor groups are behind and involved with the harrassment. They are rewarded for their thuggery remember.
If you sell your home than it is hip hip hooray for the big landowners that already own a lot and will outbid any joe schmoe.
They want to own the whole block to create blight then build condos and/or a living gated community.
Realtors that prowl your area will first obtain a sales commission from your departure.
One can rent it out and reside in a utopian paradise of the burbs ,then the City will up it's brutality with inspections.
Become your own agent i suppose and watch for straw buyers.

The cities image seems to be more important than the reality of the situation.

This will probably never be really solved given the The Mayor's unbelievable false promises of "safer streets", but I am going to close this.

I think it's time to get out the sandbags and concrete. Pour our own traffic calming if the city can't protect the lives of its own citizens!
