I hope the police are renewing their efforts to get these vehicles off our streets. They are dangerous and pose a serious threat to "livable city" and quality of life.
The dirt bikes and ATVs have been flying up and down the one way side of Winthrop Ave. as well as Carmel Street and Sherman Ave. all day. It is very hard to relax or even enjoy a decent conversation with all the noise from the bikes. I'm going to try to figure out where one of the bikes are being kept so that they can get at least one of the streets!
The dirt bike and ATV mania continues! On the weekends and nice days, these people are out in full force going up and down the one way side of Winthrop, around the corner to Carmel St. or Sherman Ave. and back to Winthrop again at a high rate of speed. They are so loud that you cannot carry on a conversation or hear tv...it is awful and it is just a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt: either the bike riders or a person just driving or trying to cross the street. I've attached a photo and know that the bikes are being stored at 479 Winthrop Ave; this was conformed by a neighbor who lives right next door to this house and has seen the bikes being taken in and out. Hopefully this will be helpful to the police and they will go and confiscate the bikes.
If you know where dirt bikes, quads and ATVs are garaged, report it to the New Haven Police ATV hotline at (203) 946-6098. Or, call your NHPD district manager. By reporting where these cars ATV and dirt bikes are stored, your district manager can build a case for getting a search warrant and eventually they will be able to confiscate the machines. But, first they need to build a case. They need to gather evidence.
For example, in the Edgewood/Dwight Neighborhood it is Sgt. Steve Torquati at (203) 946-7597. In the Whalley, Edgewood, Beaver Hills (WEB) Neighborhood it is Lt. Makiem Miller at (203) 589-3318 or mmiller@newhavenct.net. They will investigate and can confiscate the vehicles.
You can also contact your LCI neighborhood specialist. In Edgewood/Dwight, contact Tracy Claxton at (203) 946-2857 or TClaxton@newhavenct.net.
Then, contact your alderman to put pressure on the city to make this issue a priority for the police. The Edgewood ward is ward 24: call Evette Hamilton at (203) 508-5426 orWard24@newhavenct.net.
I've reported the location to my district manager, Lt. Miller so I know that he is aware and am hopeful that he is working on building a case for a search warrant to confiscate the bikes. I know these things don't happen overnight, but I want to keep posting to keep the issue open and in the forefront so that it gets the attention it needs.
I think part of the reason--if not all of it--that the dirt bikers are back tearing up our streets is that they know that police attention is no longer on them. So they return. When police decide to do something about it on, a LARGE scale, e.g. a strategic confiscation, warrant write-up etc. then nothing will change.
Completely agree FairHavener! They know that the cops can't chase them so they blatantly ride around town because they know they are untouchable. Something has to be done because someone is going to die or get seriously hurt!
If you know where dirt bikes, quads and ATVs are garaged, report it to the New Haven Police Criminal Intel Unit. The officer in charge is:
Sergeant Karl Jacobson
New Haven Police Department
Criminal Intel Unit/Narcotics
One Union Ave, New Haven CT
phone: (203) 946-6098
Fax: (203) 946-6293
e-mail: kjacobson@newhavenct.net
He will respond to emails and calls. If you report a known ATV or dirt bike location to him, he will investigate and confiscate the machines.
SeeClickFix New Haven Nation, time to make some noise of our own. Spring has sprung and again dirtbikes are flying up and streets, through parks, and on sidewalks, terrorizing the city.
On April 28 (Thursday), give the mayor’s office (203 946-8200) to let her know that it’s time to track down the bikes and confiscate!! More calls equals more action and fewer dirtbikes on the streets!!
Andrushka, just shared your CTA on our management team's Facebook page, my personal page and on Twitter! Hopefully the office will get flooded with calls to force a new plan to deal with this before summer comes!
