What I said was that we do not salt the bike path and when it is plow able snow we would plow the path. I would assume that your not stating that while we are out salting the streets for public safety that I should be plowing the bike path at midnight instead of treating the streets. I walk the bike path quite frequently myself and enjoy using the path but there is a time and a place for everything and right now its for taking care of the streets. Hi, Bob - I definitely wasn't suggesting that it needed to get done right then, mostly I just wanted to post it while it was fresh in my mind. There's definitely an overall cultural feeling in North America that bikes are purely recreational. As someone who uses a bicycle as his primary mode of transportation, I often feel that bike facilities are overlooked, and many of my friends feel the same way. Part of the reason this happens is that a lot of people don't understand what we have to deal with, or what makes for a truly useful piece of infrastructure. My goal here, as with all of my posts, is to point out that those of us who ride bikes for transportation shouldn't be treated as secondary to those who use other modes of transportation, and that there are certain difficulties we face, that others don't, purely because of our numbers and the cultural attitudes about bikes. I just want to make sure that we're being heard. As I said in my first posting on the subject, the DPW has been pretty good about plowing the path in the last couple years, but there have always been issues with the actual execution. The melt/freeze cycles make for very rough icy conditions, and nothing ever seems to get done about that. Also, the intersections between the path and road/sidewalk get blocked by the snow being removed from the streets, and then that just gets left there. These are the main things I would like to see addressed in general. Thanks for listening.

The streets should be the priority

...and the Northern Strand should be regarded as a street, which is my whole point

I wouldn't expect the path to have a long life if plows and ice melting chemicals are regularly used on it. Have you seen what happens to the roads?
