Rather than moving his car, this gentleman was waiting for me to come by to snap my daily picture. Seems like a lot of effort to avoid parking correctly, but still on the sidewalk.

spoke to owners, registered to elderly handicapped woman. It does move frequently (going to therapy). I have been assured that there will be enough room for pedestrians. She has a problem stepping up on the curb. That is why she has been getting onto the curb. They also said that they don't own a motorcycle. Not sure who own the motorcycle that was on the sidewalk

That car does not move frequently, she usually gets picked up by a van. It is a sidewalk. So she gets to park on the sidewalk? That doesn't seem right. It hasn't moved since the last time you drove by. I guess I will have to put it on the traffic commission agenda. There are too many school children walking in the street because they feel they own the sidewalk.

Having a similar problem on Winthrop st. Cops pass cars parked on the curb day in and day out without ticketing. If the woman is handicapped and unable to successfully navigate her environment it may be time for her to move?

It was there all weekend. But you did tell them it was fine to park on the sidewalk, so they will. They have several stairs on their house, if she can navigate them (and I have seen her do it) then a very low curb isn't why they are parking on the sidewalk. They are because they can. I am not sure why the police department would be telling them they are allowed to. Pedestrians typically don't want to navigate around a car on the sidewalk (people that park on sidewalks are selfish and likely to yell at you if they think you are too close to their car) so they will walk in the street. This is a public safety issue. The T bus stop is at the corner and the high school and middle school buses let out there are well...and the elementary school on that street has a large number of students who walk up from that direction. Time to clear the sidewalks. Incidentally, earlier today there was a large black pick up truck extending out of the driveway across the entire sidewalk because this has been allowed for so long. Others see it and do it too.

Pedestrians do not have to navigate around the car. I have been assured that pedestrians and others will not have a problem. We will continue to monitor it. The car has not been abandoned there and is moving, (from what I can see) everyday. I haven't been down there on weekends.

Thanks for continuing to go down. That is the most the car has moved in 10 years combined. Previously the only time it moved was for snow emergencies and street cleaning. People will have to go into the street, because cars also hang out the driveway across the street quite frequently. But frankly, it shouldn't matter how often it moves because it should NEVER be on the sidewalk. Across the street people are getting $200 fines for off leash dogs...

And it continues to be on the sidewalk dor 20+ hours per day 7 days per week.

Even with a police detail and them being in the way...no ticket...no tow.

Isn't Park St. the one where the DPW lowered the curb on the Hickey park side to make the sidewalk into a parking lot? They put a new sidewalk inside the park and let the cars park on the sidewalk. This car can't even park on that side of the street?

Yes. It is. This family had them build the new sidewalk on the park side with a slanted curb so it was easier for them to drive up. Five years later after many meetings with DPW and the mayor a path was built. They started parking on that and I then had to petition for a fence to be built in between so pedestrians could walk. Before that was built, I was told to cross the street, but said I couldn't because this car was on that sidewalk. That path is usually covered in the snow that those parking on the sidewalk shovel onto it in the winter. The DPW was also plowing this out in previous years, so where the road and sidewalk meet is heavily damaged. Before this SeeClickFix, this car only moved when there was street cleaning or a snow emergency, so it often didn't move for months at a time.

This is unconscionable. The police are excusing this woman because she is "elderly" and "handicapped", without acknowledging that this car prevents other handicapped individuals from navigating a public sidewalk, as is their right. Perhaps a pedestrian could fit through the gap, but an individual in a wheelchair would have problems, and that is not ok. Medford needs to enforce its laws equally for all people, not give special treatment to family of police. They most of all should value our laws, and recognize that they create a better society. Parking on sidewalks should be an immediate tow, wherever it is seen. No exceptions.

In addition to google street view, this car is even parked on the sidewalk in the picture taken for the town's property assessment database. Strange how it seems to always be there, but wasn't when the captain rolled by. I have full confidence this is just a civy with no affiliation with MPD and they must have made a parking mistake one time. I'm sure the PD's absence of response is indicative of the issue being taken care of.

If anyone is at all able to like photograph and post this ongoing and consistently I may have a resource to help-enough is enough and obviously the city police won't be dealing with this....

If parkers are worried about being rear-ended the solution is to slow traffic and guide to the centerline of Park St. A perfect solution would be a bulb-out crosswalk (paint and plastic poles) at the mid-block crossing from Hickey Park and potentially at the Fellway end (or at least something to slow traffic that turns right from Fellsway onto Park St)

Why are all the pictures from so far away and the same angle? Why are the police putting so much effort for one parked car that has been proven to move on a regular basis? It seems to me the police have better things to do with there resources than patrol one street to catch a handicapped woman with her front wheels on the sidewalk. This sounds like a personal problem by somebody and it really comes through as you read the posts.

This car moves now because of this post...previously this car only moved for street cleaning and snow emergencies. There is NO advantage to parking on the sidewalk for the vehicle owner. ONLY disadvantages to pedestrians. This is what a bad neighbor looks like. Basic curtesy would be to move the car OFF the sidewalk...especially since they are fond of having a car hanging out of the driveway as well.

And if you would like closer pictures and live on Brogan Road, feel free to take them...the car hasn't moved since Tuesday morning when it was returned after the weekly street cleaning...

I've lived across from Hickey Park for a very long time...so let's clear some things up..before those "angled curbs" were put in...the hot top on the street went right up to the fence...just like "Morrison Park"...why?..because it's "legal parking"....during softball & baseball season & kids playing basketball...cars...all cars park there...it's not a personal parking platform...you've said to the city council that the car didn't move in "9 years?" (Why let the truth get in the way of a good story) & when does she hang her car out of her driveway?...that the car completely obstructs the entire sidewalk?...I have walked by that car..and the trees, fire hydrants..and lamp-posts impede the sidewalks more then two tires on the curb!..(do the "little children" that you like to talk about so much, just walk right in to those things?).. and to call that wonderful woman a "bad neighbor"...proves to me how "personal & petty" your being about this!....oh...by the way...stop letting your dog crap in the park and not pick it up...that's kinda a "bad neighbor move too!"

It took me five years to get a path paved next to that "parking platform" and the fence was added AFTER because the neighbors immediately parked straddling the sidewalk and the new parking path...so maybe your history is a bit fuzzy. There is no valid reason to be on the sidewalk...her grown children are parking it up there, so there may also be some fraud in place with the HP placard, so don't open that can of worms for her...a wonderful person doesn't obstruct the sidewalk. I think you may be protesting too much...does it hurt you for this car to join all the others on that side of the street in the street? Are you the weirdo watching everyone who comes to the park to see if they are taking pictures of this car? Because that is creepy...

And believe me, I pick up after my dog. Because I am a good neighbor...but maybe others could follow suit...lots of poop in that park...funny how personal you are taking this...sidewalks are required to be ADA compliant...someone with an HP Placard is required to park legally....also, the placard is only supposed to be used when the person who it is assigned to is using it...not family members who are driving the car around the block because they heard on the scanner that someone is coming to check on it...

The angled curbing has ruined that street (it is all cracked and holey because of cars driving up and stressing the road in a way it wasn't designed to be stressed)...it was meant to be a sidewalk, but MANY city officials told me the neighbors were used to parking there and they couldn't break them of the habit...many of those people moved away, but the habit is formed...times change...park on the street. Streets are for cars...sidewalk are for people (and ONLY people...not cars that orefer the sidewalk because that is what they want and one side of the street isn't enough they want both because they want it!).

I am in favor of tearing that up and making the street wider there if necessary, but they should not have a personal parking lot that exempts them from moving for street cleaning and snow emergencies...because it is either street or sidewalk...can't switch back and forth to accommodate you...it would be nice if the path fence could come down so people could cross when they want instead of having to go the length of the park whether they want to or not.

Hardly a comparison. Do people occasionally get ticketed for going slightly over the speed limit? Yes. Do people occasionally get ticketed for parking to far away away from the curb? Yes. Do people occasionally get told when they bring more items than they should thorough an express checkout line? Yes. Do people occasionally get ticketed for Jay walking? Yes. You are lying to yourself if you think none of the minor offenses above didn't occasionally get its equivalent consequence. Anyone who does any of the above on a consistent and regular basis is inconsiderate.

Yet, it is as you say, this one "nice" owner with this one single car has been commiting this offense for nine years and without consequence.

Since sidewalk parking is an exception to the rules, it seems the obligation should be on the car for explaining why the exception (sidewalk parking) is good & needed.

My guess is that the owners here judge that parking out of the way of "traffic" is safer even though it itakes space that could be used by gentle/vulnerable sidewalk and park users.

The ironic thing is that parking as they do makes the street very wide open and encourages road traffic to speed up and makes Park a more attractive cut-through. Parking out of the way of traffic attracts more and faster traffic. Fatal accidents (or having a side mirror or door clipped)are much more likely when cars move at 30mph or push 40 than at 15 or 20 (as they would naturally do if folks parked on the black top)

All users (driving, walking, parking, playing, watching, biking --and even car traffic in the street) would be safer if cars parked fully on the black top and worked together to slow traffic for this tenth of a mile segment.

Lets tap the good will here: parking on the sidewalk was likely thought to be a safe, modest, and neighborly way to show consideration for traffic in the street.

Creating wider, better connected sidewalks is a way to make all "non-traffic" users safer and healthier.

All users want good things and are thinking generously as the best neighbors will.

It is "traffic" that turns out to be the least neighborly and the most ungrateful--if you give it extra space it just gets greedy, comes from farther away, and gets faster, busier, noisier and more damaging and deadly.

Parking far from the centerline is like feeding pigeons or geese: it is done with the best of intentions, but we eventually learn it actually makes the problem worse. A lot of very nice people who thought for a long time that accommodating traffic was the best will be as disappointed as any "Feed the Birds"/Mary Poppins fan eventually was/is. Please don't feed the traffic.

Don't these houses have, wait for it, driveways?

It's a shame this issue has generated so much bickering between residents...especially when it could be quickly and easily solved by MPD simply enforcing the rules universally and not making exceptions.

It's also a shame that these issues continue the erosion of public trust for a municipal government that engages in favoritism.

I noticed today, the car is on the other sidewalk next to the park because today it's trash/recycle pick up day. Clearly the owner is capable of parking it elsewhere while making it into his/her own home.
