Thank you for reporting this. I reported the same thing yesterday morning after I witnessed two men hacking on the fence with a section of pipe on Saturday evening. I also called the APD non-emergency number at that time to report it the vandalism in progress.

Perhaps if the park areas were more visible it would not be so attractive as a secluded haven. The
reddish slats in the chain link fencing could be removed, as well as cutting down some of the hedges that encompass the fence would help. They will be removed anyways when the park is developed.

Candace: Sorry, I can't confirm if APD actually came or not. I was on my way somewhere and could not stay.I gave a description of the two men, what they were wearing, etc. I started to take a photo with my cell phone, but they were cursing at me to "mind your own f--king business, a--hole...", so I scooted down the street to the first parking area make the phone call. The person on the phone (dispatcher?) asked me if they appeared to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol (no, not that I could tell) and that the APD was "very familiar with the situation at that location..." The fence is open even wider this morning...

Thank you for the update on the fence. I will ask Public Works if they can secure the fence again, and maybe make it more difficult for people to cut the fence open. I have asked officers to provide extra patrols in the area, and report any large piles of garbage to me so I can ask Public Works to pick them up. Please continue to call the non-emergency line at APD if you see people vandalizing or entering the area. The number is 337-8820.

There are large piles of garbage just behind the fence. If you walk the beltline, walk the parking lot, directly behind the college and 960 Atlantic you can't miss it. You can see it behind the fence through the slats. There are also bags of garbage where this fence was opened up. This is where the newly planted bushes/trees are. I don't understand why the garbage is not being taken away. Is there no proactive upkeep of this "Park"? I know that the parks department is supposed to take care of this area but they are not doing that.

Thank you, Lt Munoz. I live in the 'California Heritage' subdivision just across Atlantic (entrances on Bartlett Drive). Myself and several others have been active in monitoring and reporting things to APR and APD, both with regard to the Jean Sweeney OpenSpace as well as our HOA property. We are also active in spreading the word within our HOA via the "NextDoor" web portal. We have organized an event for Nat'l Night Out on Tuesday, August 2nd at 6:00 PM in our HOA. We hope to get more neighbors to become pro-active in reporting trespassers on our property, using our 'tot-lot' playground area, taking water from faucets, and packages that go missing from porches. etc.

It's open again. There was another fence portion put in front of this and the homeless have pushed a part of the fence behind that down. There is still garbage. There are still stray animals and dogs and homeless people living here. I thought the City had a plan in place for this?

This morning I saw a homeless man, who I know lives in the beltway because I see him frequently, park his bike and enter through this opening.There are still homeless living there.There are still piles of garbage behind the fence. What is being done about this? Will anything be done?
